Senior Director, Responsive Grantmaking (May – September 2024)

Summary: The Responsive Grantmaking Intern will report to the Program Manager, Leadership Development to assist with the annual cycle of programming and grantmaking. This includes planning and management of the Cleveland Foundation (TCF) Summer Internship Program, implementation of the Cleveland Foundation Public Service Fellowship, database management and outreach related to recruitment efforts for the Cleveland Foundation’s Leadership Development programs, communications to stakeholders, support for evaluation and alumni engagement, and research and writing assistance related to responsive grantmaking objectives. The position will work as part of internal, high-performing teams to meet program, grantmaking, and organizational objectives.

The intern role is designed to expose and challenge a current junior, senior, or graduate-level student pursuing a career in nonprofit management, urban studies, urban development, education, or related fields with a particular focus on program management. The intern will work approximately 20-25 hours per week and be available during school breaks, including summers. The number of hours required is expected to rise to thirty hours per week during the summer of 2024.

Responsibilities and Expected Outcomes:

Assist with communications, planning, and management of the Cleveland Foundation Summer Internship Program

o Work with HR and staff to review applications and conduct interviews

o Provide support to interns host organizations before and throughout the 11-week program

o Assist with bi-weekly program logistics and professional development, being present to take attendance and facilitate some pre-planned sessions when needed

o Take photos, send language for #SummerofPurpose posts (beginning, middle, and end of summer), and facilitate blog reminders with TCF Marketing & Communications staff

o Send weekly reminder emails, MS Teams posts, and/or e-newsletters to interns

Assist with communications, planning, and implementation of the Cleveland Foundation Public Service Fellowship

o Assist with monthly program logistics and professional development, being present to take attendance and facilitate some pre-planned sessions when needed

o Work with staff to provide support to fellows and host organizations as required

o Take photos and send language for #FellowFriday posts to TCF Marketing & Communications staff

o Conduct programmatic research, building off the initial 2016 program study, recommendations from the Cleveland Foundation’s ongoing strategic direction and planning efforts, and fellows’ feedback – drawing comparisons to programs across the U.S./internationally as is relevant

Conduct database management and outreach related to recruitment efforts for the Cleveland Foundation’s Leadership Development programs.

Send and track informational communications to a variety of stakeholders
Manage Handshake postings
Respond to some inquiries from prospective host organizations and applicants
Register for and attend some local recruitment events

Support evaluation and alumni engagement for TCF’s Leadership Development programs

Send and track response submissions to pre-, mid-, and end-of-summer SIP surveys and monthly PSF surveys, helping to analyze trends as is needed
Launch and update separate SIP and PSF alumni LinkedIn groups
Assist and collaborate with alumni and Marketing & Communications staff to collect stories and plan/manage events, as schedule permits

Provide research and writing assistance related to responsive grantmaking objectives

As time permits, work with various Program Officers and Program Managers to compile grantmaking histories, review grant reports, analyze trends of specific funds or within certain interest areas, and/or help steward forward responsive grant requests from organizations

Participate in staff meetings, TCF convenings, and strategic planning conversations as needed

Anticipated learning objectives to be accomplished through the internship experience include an increased understanding of:

o Collaborative, interdisciplinary program management

o Engagement and partnership with external stakeholders, both organizations and individuals

o Increased understanding of the grantmaking process, from inquiry through reporting

o Internal strategic change and external leadership through the perspective of a community foundation

Requirements

Essential Qualifications, Credentials, and Technical Skills Required:

o Non-profit management, urban development, education, or other relevant major being pursued at the junior or senior undergraduate level, graduate level preferred

o Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to interact with a diverse group of staff and external constituents. The ability to work in a complex environment requiring flexibility and collaboration

o High ethical standards and regard for confidentiality and professionalism

o Self-motivated with high attention to detail, ability to take initiative and accuracy required

o Strong organizational, research, and program management skills

o Ability to coordinate and manage several projects simultaneously

o Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Willingness to ask questions when in need of direction or clarification

o Proficient technology skills, including Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, internet research, etc.

o Prompt attendance and active participation required particularly on programming days. In-person workdays to be established on a set, semester-by-semester schedule and in accordance with program calendars

PAY:

The Cleveland Foundation makes pay equity and competitive pay rates a priority for individuals across all positions. This position pays $17.00 per hour.
