Description

Thriving Connectionsis a community-based initiative that creates relationships across economic class and race lines, matching people of low-income called Captains with middle or upper income Allies. The Thriving ConnectionsYouth Support Specialist primary role is to support the children to help them be successful in Thriving Connections and in life. The Thriving Connections Youth Support Specialist will treat all individuals with dignity and respect, make necessary referrals for clients, and exemplify the South Central Community Action Program, Inc.’s commitment to helping people.

Helps Thriving Connections staff provide and maintain appropriate welcoming classroom environment and atmosphere where children are accepted and respected as individuals; Communicates positively with children.
Provides direct supervision care to Thriving Connections youth in one-on-one or group settings to implement skill acquisition and behavior reduction treatments as directed by the supervisor.
Abides by South Central Community Action, Inc. policies and Thriving Connections Guiding Coalition suggestions regarding youth programming.
Helps plan and implement weekly youth programming, prepares room and materials for activities; communicates positively with children; uses appropriate child development methods.
Uses knowledge of child development to identify challenges and support children where they are; adapts activities for children with disabilities and challenges.
Collects and shares data on behavior and programming.
Collaborates, communicates, and assists with the training of parents, community members, and staff.
Provides a safe and supportive environment for Thriving Connections community members of all ages.
Provides guidance to the Volunteer Coordinator, interns, and volunteers in providing guidance and direction with their interactions with the children of Thriving Connections.
Assists families and maintains open communications; encourages parent involvement; respects culture and background of families; acts as a positive role model and resource for parents and children.

Qualifications

High School Diploma, on an A.S./B.A./B.S. degree in Education, Sociology, Psychology, Public Health, or Nursing or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Special Requirements

Ability to obtain CYC certification within 2 years of hire.
Skilled in the use of computers for email, creation, and manipulation of databases and Microsoft Office.
Must be able to obtain CPR and First Aid Certification.
Ability to travel locally, regionally, and nationally to attend to daily work demands, meetings, workshops, and conferences.
Must ensure efficient operations and present a professional image in conduct, attitude, and attire.
Must be philosophically compatible with the mission of SCCAP.

Physical/Mental Demands

Requires sitting, standing, stooping, bending and reaching with manual dexterity sufficient to operate standard office machines such as computers, fax machines, calculators, copy machines, telephone and other office equipment. May require lifting up to 50 pounds. Requires normal range of hearing and vision.

Must be able to handle diverse work problems on a daily basis. Requires ability to set priorities and work schedule yet adjust to changes necessitated by last minute assignments and deadline requests that may prove stressful. Consistent pleasant attitude is necessary with personal maturity as an important attribute. Must relate and interact with people at all levels of the company and in a culturally diverse environment.
