Overview

The Associate Director of Philanthropic Giving works to secure philanthropic support from individual donors to the College. This position solicits donors for charitable contributions of $50,000+ to secure funding for a variety of initiatives and strategic priorities of the College. Manages a personal portfolio of 75-125 alumni and donors with the capacity to give between $100,000-$1,000,000 and travels to defined territories within the United States on a regular basis. Conducts 100-120 one-on-one visits with donors with annual revenue production expectation of $1,000,000-$3,000,000. Works as part of the Philanthropic Giving team within the Advancement division. Moves donors through the cultivation pipeline, from qualifying, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding the gift.

This is a full-time position with a hybrid onsite schedule. This role requires 8-10 trips of ~2-4 days each to regions of the United States every year.

Responsibilities

Oversee a regional and local portfolio of ~75-125 constituents, raising philanthropic outright and planned gifts of $50,000 or more to advance the mission of Macalester College. Understand Macalester’s programs, aspirations, and strategic priorities, and build and nurture relationships with donors to match the donor’s interests and passions to the institution’s highest priorities. Implement equitable philanthropic practices, including community-centric fundraising practices, in work with donors.
Initiate contact with a portfolio of individual major gift donors and potential donors who have the capacity to make philanthropic gifts between $100,000-$1,000,000; qualify philanthropic capacity and affinity, develop appropriate cultivation strategies, complete successful solicitations, maintain stewardship contacts and strengthen relationships through a disciplined schedule of appointments and other meaningful activities. Create, implement, and maintain a custom relationship plan for each qualified donor to assist in the creation of engagement offers and asks. Regularly document these activities through the donor database and leverage digital relationship management tools in daily work.
Travel to visit portfolio donors in assigned key U.S. regions is expected throughout the year. An average of 8-10 trips per year of approximately 2-4 days each is expected in this role. Approximately 110-120 face-to-face or virtual meetings with portfolio constituents is expected annually. Annual revenue production for this role is $1,000,000-$3,000,000.
Leverage and collaborate with the Planned Giving team as needed to advance gift conversations. Work in partnership with the Macalester Fund and Foundation, Government, and Corporate Relations teams to secure and grow annual support from donors. Serve as a team member in supporting key Macalester events, through planning consultation and attendance, which includes evening and weekend work.
Work in partnership with the Philanthropic Giving associate and Donor Relations team to create fund agreements, proposals and stewardship materials to present to donors.
Support Advancement-related activities and events (MacFest, Macalester Summit, Reunion, campaign events, division and team retreats, program-specific events, etc.) through participation in team meetings, activities, and attendance. Liaise with campus programs and departments to maintain and build relationships across campus through 1:1 meetings, attendance at music and athletic events, campus programs, lectures, ceremonies, etc. and leverage these activities in donor portfolio work.
Commitment to equity: Infuse diversity, equity, inclusion and justice best practices including community-centric fundraising approaches in both the work and the culture of the team. Engage in and promote Macalester’s culture of diversity and inclusion, encompassing individuals of any heritage, identity, status, or orientation. Create a work environment that supports gift officers, including interactions in the field. Identify ways to facilitate healthy dialogue and responses to such situations within the organization.
Manage logistical and administrative work, including travel planning, scheduling, expense reporting, contact reports, goal-setting and monitoring, etc.

Qualifications

3-5 years of prior experience as a frontline fundraiser required. Translatable skills, such as previous Advancement experience, work involving account/relationship management, customer or client relations, hospitality, sales pipelines, or other relevant experience may be taken into consideration as relevant work experience.
Bachelor’s Degree required.
Able to manage complex projects and work as an independent individual contributor; excellent time management and prioritization skills. Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills, both written and in person. Comfort with discussing philanthropic and personal financial conversations with individuals.
Ability to work confidently in a variety of computer programs, including Google Suite, Excel, email, calendar, and database CRM programs. Familiarity with Slate, The Raiser’s Edge, Salesforce, or similar Advancement CRM preferred.
Able to handle multiple deadlines and priorities; able to manage a portfolio of 75-125 relationships and steward individuals through different stages of the donor cultivation cycle.
Able to utilize discernment, tactful communication, and uphold ethical code of conduct when interacting with alumni and donors. Able to exercise mature judgment in working with on- and off-campus constituents.
Ability to stay within a set travel budget and manage expense reports related to travel.
Ability to plan and coordinate travel logistics associated with donor trips, and maintain office work requirements while on the road.
Solid and consistent record keeping and general administrative responsibilities required for smooth office operation. Timely response to colleagues and donors.

Compensation:

The annual salary for this position is $83,600-87,400 depending on experience.
