Primary Purpose:
Provide strategic and methodological oversight to CHEST’s clinical practice guideline development and direct CHEST staff and activities in the areas of guideline development, dissemination, and implementation. Provide methodological support for clinical practice guidelines, utilizing the Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE) approach. Work with other CHEST strategy leaders to identify opportunities for new guideline dissemination and implementation opportunities that help close known practice gaps. Provide direction to guideline staff, liaise with committees and partner with external stakeholders to help CHEST implement strategic efforts and meet defined goals in guideline development.
Essential Functions/Responsibilities:
- Demonstrate a passion for crushing lung disease and embody CHEST values: honor the team, lead with integrity, leverage passion, cultivate innovation, and have serious fun.
- Manage CHEST’s portfolio of clinical practice guidelines, leading longitudinal planning and ensuring alignment with organizational strategy and initiatives. Incorporate transparent processes that ensure timely and relevant selection and prioritization of guideline topics and recommendations.
- Direct department staff and oversee management of contract staff and volunteer groups, setting clear expectations and timelines and addressing barriers to successful and timely work output.
- Develop and maintain annual guidelines budget, preparing justification for Finance Committee and Board of Regents.
- Maintain and evolve CHEST standards for guideline development to ensure rigorous application of available evidence, efficient and timely production, and utility to the target audience.
- Provide guidance internally on education efforts stemming from or related to existing and emerging CHEST guidelines.
- Provide and oversee provision of methodology on key organizational initiatives.
- Serve as lead methodologist on assigned topics, including development of evidence-based guidelines, expert panel reports, and other scientific resources, which will include but not be limited to the following:
- Develop clinical questions utilizing the Population, Intervention, Comparison, Outcome (PICO) model
- Formulate search strategies, determine inclusion/exclusion criteria, and conduct systematic and comprehensive literature searches
- Screen search results to identify relevant studies
- Acquire articles, maintain article files and EndNote libraries
- Review articles and extract relevant data into evidence tables (summary of findings, descriptive, and methodological assessment tables) and evidence profiles
- Assess study quality
- Conduct meta-analyses
- Write systematic reviews
- Facilitate interpretation of evidence tables and profiles
9. Collaborate with clinicians and CHEST staff to develop derivative products for published guidelines to foster physician best practices and greater use of evidence in daily physician-patient decision-making. Work with other team and departmental staff to assess effectiveness of derivatives and continually improve product functionality and development processes.
10. Perform methodologic reviews of guidelines submitted to the CHEST Journal by outside medical societies in collaboration with the CHEST Editor in Chief.
11. Remain active in the guidelines and quality improvement community, promoting personal continuing development and understanding of the landscape, in addition to representing CHEST as an innovator in this space.
Other Functions/Responsibilities:
- Assist with other projects and tasks of the department, as necessary, including obtaining articles and documents requested by CHEST staff.
- Periodic travel required to represent CHEST at professional society and business meetings.
Required Qualifications:
- Advanced post-graduate degree in one or more of the following: health services research, epidemiology, public health, health sciences, library science, or clinical area such as medicine or nursing with high level of comfort dealing with medical terms, concepts and taxonomies.
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience in one or more of the following: biostatistics, research methods, evidence-based medicine, literature review, systematic reviews, guideline development and critical appraisal, scientific protocol development and study design, guideline dissemination and implementation.
- Experience in clinical practice guideline development leveraging GRADE or comparable methodology, resulting in 5 or more guideline publications.
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience reviewing, analyzing, and synthesizing clinical, scientific, and health research literature; understanding of biostatistics, research methods, protocol development and study design.
- Strong interpersonal and networking skills; ability to gain trust and communicate complex concepts with clarity to diverse groups (i.e., physician volunteers, academics, association staff), navigate formal and informal channels to leverage the right people and expertise to accomplish work.
- Experience conducting searches with PubMed and other online research databases along with the ability to approach scientific and medical literature from an analytic perspective.
- Strong prioritization skills, drive to execute on tasks and goals and anticipate contingency needs. Demonstrated ability to participate in multiple large concurrent projects at different phases and focus attention accordingly.
- Demonstrated skills to apply effective oral, electronic, and written communication methods with colleagues and volunteers; keen ability to visualize information in slides and other tools.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively both independently and with teams.
- Flexibility and adaptability.
- Proficiency in literature search and key guideline development toolsets, such as EndNote, GRADEPro, DistillerSR, and RevMan.

Additional Information
The annual base salary range for this position is USD $150,000 to USD $165,000. This pay range represents base pay only and excludes any additional items such as incentives, bonuses, or other items.
