Job Summary
The Director, Strategic Giving is responsible for strategic advancement and operational leadership of the principal, major, mid-level, and planned giving programs of IEEE. The incumbent in this position aligns donor interests with organizational mission to maximize philanthropic growth. In addition to supervisory responsibilities, the Director, Strategic Giving, maintains a personal caseload of prospects and fundraising goals.
This individual must be both a strategic thinker and a hands-on fundraiser – a builder who thrives on growth, innovation, and results. They report to the IEEE Foundation Executive Director and collaborate with the other IEEE Foundation senior leaders to coordinate efforts to enhance the overall visibility of the IEEE Foundation and IEEE social impact initiatives, and to ensure a robust, coordinated fundraising program and adherence to best practices and policies.
Key Responsibilities
Principle, Major, and Mid-level Giving Programs (50%)
Planned Giving Program (25%)
- Designs, implements, and manages a comprehensive planned giving program to drive organizational sustainability through legacy giving.
- Leads efforts to cultivate donors for future gifts by educating prospects and working with financial advisors
- Collaborates with Donor Outreach and Engagement to 1) develop marketing materials and communications strategies for the planned giving program; 2) organize planned giving events/webinars; and 3) recognize and steward planned giving donors
Directs management of the probate process for received notifications, working with executors, attorneys, and financial institutions.
Talent Leadership & Fiscal Management (15%)
- Leads the Principle, Major, Mid-Level, and Planned Giving team
- Promotes a culture of collaboration, high performance, transparency, and continuous improvement across all teams and functions.
- Oversees all personnel-related matters for his/her direct reports, including, but not limited to, recruitment, mentorship, performance management, and professional development.
- Provides effective and efficient contribution and expense budgeting and forecasting; negotiates contracts with suppliers and consultants.
- Ensures that legal and policy compliance requirements in their areas of responsibility are met.
Relationship and Stakeholder Management (10%)
- Seeds, cultivates, maintains, and grows relationships with numerous internal and external partners, including donors and prospects, IEEE professional staff and volunteers, IEEE organizational units and members, and other related organizations.
- Leads strategic guidance, education/training, and tools for Board members and program partners to enhance their effectiveness in and support of fundraising.
- Collaborate with the Director, Donor Outreach and Engagement, to report fundraising results and manage the Development Committee.
- Serve as the philanthropic relationship manager for assigned program partners.
- Delivers on special projects as assigned.
Education
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience Req
Work Experience
- 10-15 years Closing principle, major and planned charitable donations Req
- 7-10 years Managerial level capacity, including working collaboratively across business units and stakeholder communities Req
Licenses and Certifications
- Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE) Designation Upon Hire Pref
Skills and Requirements
- Knowledge of fundraising revenue streams and major and planned giving methods
- Knowledge of professional associations is preferred;
- Strong verbal and written communication skills across platforms, superior listening skills, and an ability to inspire and influence others around ideas that secure philanthropic investment;
- Ability to craft persuasive proposals and meaningful acknowledgments, develop compelling talking points for leadership, and deliver effective presentations to current and future funders, colleagues, volunteers, and other stakeholders;
- Strong analytical skills to navigate prospects through the donor pipeline;
- Competence in budgeting and revenue goal setting;
- Ability to handle multiple assignments simultaneously with changing priorities;
- Capable of meeting deadlines and working cross-functionally to achieve goals;
- Possesses advanced organizational skills and practices strict attention to detail;
- Demonstrated abilities in applying business solutions to changing needs;
- Ability to benchmark best practices and apply learning across the team;
- Capacity to engage colleagues, fostering a cooperative and collaborative environment;
- Technical knowledge of IRS gift rules;
- Demonstrate the highest level of professionalism dealing with sensitive and/or confidential matters;
- Experience with working with volunteer Boards and Committees required;
- Positive, proactive work attitude;
- Technologically savvy knowledge worker who seeks technology solutions to business challenges;
- Excellent computer skills, including proficiencies in Google Programs and Microsoft Office suite of products;
- Knowledge of Raiser’s Edge NXT;
- Must be able to work during weekends and/or evenings several times per year
