Kids in Need of Defense (KIND) is a global leader in the protection of unaccompanied and separated children who are forcibly displaced from their countries of origin. Launched in 2008, KIND champions a world in which every child’s rights and well-being are protected throughout their journey to safety.
Building on its extensive programming and successful model in the United States, KIND is expanding in the Americas and Europe to bring its experience to bear in working with unaccompanied and separated children. Our work focuses on addressing the legal and mental health needs of this population; building strong partnerships and engaging in training and capacity strengthening with governments, NGOs, and the private sector; and advocating for systemic and pragmatic reforms to advance the rights of unaccompanied and separated children.
Position Summary
KIND seeks a Communications Coordinator, Europe to develop and lead KIND’s communications strategy throughout Europe and promote KIND as a leading, mission-driven organization in the protection of unaccompanied and separated children. The Communications Coordinator, Europe, will drive KIND’s brand and messaging, ensuring our programs and success are communicated effectively and consistently to intended audiences.
Based out of KIND’s headquarters in Brussels and working closely with KIND’s team in Europe and the Global Communications Team based in the United States, the Communications Coordinator will play a crucial role in KIND’s Europe-focused leadership team, advising, overseeing, and implementing strategic engagement, including setting communications priorities for funding proposals, creating communications campaigns to advance specific objectives, curating client storytelling content, and developing materials and assets that advance the organization’s mission throughout Europe.
The Coordinator will keep the Global Communications Team, apprised of KIND’s work in Europe, coordinating work flows as needed, and ensure that all communications align with KIND’s policies, brand guidelines, and goals globally.
The Coordinator will be committed to KIND’s mission and have experience of providing communication support within a not-for-profit organization.
Under KIND’s matrix management model, the Communications Coordinator, Europe, reports to the Vice President, Communications and Public Engagement and to the Senior Vice President and Regional Director, Europe.
This position is based in Brussels, Belgium.
The candidate must possess legal authorization to work in Belgium.
This role is full-time, but will consider candidates who are available part-time.
Travel required within Europe with occasional international/overseas travel.

Essential Fuctions
Strategic Communications Leadership
- Formulates and leads the European communications strategy to advance KIND’s work in Europe.
- Serves as a leader within the Europe team to ensure communications efforts advance objectives across the region and align with KIND’s global communications and programmatic goals.
- Oversees project production timelines and ensure adherence to deadlines, protocols, and editorial procedures
- Informs communications opportunities contained in fundraising proposals.
- Establishes key performance indicators (KPIs) to measure the effectiveness of communication strategies and campaigns. Regularly analyzes metrics and prepares reports to assess performance and inform future communication efforts.
- Works closely with KIND leadership in Europe and the Global Communications Teams to ensure compliance with KIND’s fiscal responsibility and reporting guidelines.
Public Engagement and Brand
- Coordinates with KIND staff in Europe to gather, write, and edit compelling content about KIND and its partners’ work in Europe, including such materials as fact sheets, blogs, social media posts, and website content.
- Reviews all written content for language accuracy, tone, and compliance with KIND’s Brand and Writing Style Guides.
- Oversees the collection of visual assets to illustrate KIND and our partners’ work, including photos, video, audio, and client artwork.
- Drives media outreach, including curation of media contacts, creation of press engagement materials (i.e., press release, opinion-editorial pieces, backgrounders, pitch memos), direct communication with members of the media to secure press coverage, and identification of opportunities to showcase KIND’s expertise and best practices.
- Coordinates Europe-focused social media activities to ensure compliance with KIND’s global social media strategy, creating and gathering content that advances the organization’s objectives in Europe and globally.
- Oversees printing and production of materials in Europe.
- Represents KIND at select meetings and events.
Storytelling
- Leads KIND’s robust storytelling efforts in Europe by gathering stories of the young people we serve.
- Assists KIND staff, partners, and volunteers, to ensure compliance with KIND’s consent process.
- Works closely with the Europe and Communications Teams to promote and support the engagement and participation of children and young people’s voices in KIND’s work in Europe.
- Establishes relationships with communications leads at partner organizations to promote the sharing of stories and information that furthers shared goals.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications and Requirements
- Undergraduate degree in marketing, communications, public relations, or related field.
- Must be fluent in English. Fluency in French preferred. Knowledge of other European languages a plus.
- Minimum of five years of experience in a communications role.
- Preferred experience in immigration or child-focused issues.
- Passion for KIND’s mission of supporting unaccompanied and separated children and an ability to lead strategic communications to help achieve desired programmatic objectives.
- Proven experience in journalism, communications, or content generation.
- Strong presentation and public speaking skills and the ability to communicate effectively to a variety of stakeholders.
- Excellent writing, editing, and proofreading skills including the ability to accurately synthesize complex and sensitive material for a variety of audiences.
- Knowledge of the media landscape in Europe.
- Strong digital and social media skills.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (such as Word, Teams, Excel, etc.)
- Ability to work collaboratively and multi-task in our KIND environment, managing numerous priorities and emerging opportunities.
- Excellent organizational skills with the ability to work on multiple projects in a deadline-oriented environment; ability to prioritize tasks and delegate as appropriate.
- Ability to multitask and work with a sense of urgency in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
