Freedom House has partnered with a core group of international and Afghan NGOs to create the Afghanistan Human Rights Coordination Mechanism. The goal of the Mechanism is three-fold: 1) to provide information and support to Afghan Human Rights defenders and CSOs inside and outside the country in order to enhance their safety and security; 2) contribute to the sustainability of human rights defenders, organizations and networks in Afghanistan; and 3) influence international actors to sustain their commitment to human rights protections in Afghanistan and advance accountability for human rights abuses. The Mechanism will be a platform to convene a broad range of stakeholders including Afghan human rights defenders, international NGOs, humanitarians, academic institutions, donors, and others interested in supporting at-risk Afghans.
Intern Responsibilities:
-
Under the direct supervision of the Distinguished Fellow and Senior Program Manager, the intern will assist the Mechanism chiefly by setting up, attending and tech trouble-shooting virtual and in-person meetings of working groups, including sending invitations, pre-registering attendees, opening channels for interpreters, welcoming participants in the waiting room, helping to develop an agenda, making shared documents available to participants, etc. Working groups and other international meetings tend to take place between 8-11 am. Other routine assignments may include taking notes at meetings, assisting in using excel spreadsheets for budgets, attending and reporting back on Afghan-related speaking events, and checking info mailbox for the Mechanism. Intern may be asked to participate in preparing surveys, design forms on google forms, distribute surveys to participants and collect responses. Intern would then participate in analyzing responses and preparing an analytical report.
-
Intern will gain knowledge of the situation for human rights defenders inside Afghanistan and in exile and will learn about international advocacy on crisis situations.
Additional Considerations:
Freedom House recognizes the impact of systemic racism and the legacy of colonialism in international development, and strongly encourages Black, Indigenous, and People of Color to apply.
