The Center for Victims of Torture is hiring a Volunteer Coordinator to administer CVT’s volunteer and internship program. The Volunteer Coordinator is responsible for all aspects of volunteer and intern recruitment, coordination and support, collaboration with staff to ensure mutually beneficial relationships between organization and volunteers and maintains volunteer program records. They develop and maintain relationships within the community to ensure strong support of CVT and the volunteer program. Is responsible for growing and modernizing volunteer program to reflect hybrid/remote, online, digital, nationwide opportunities.

The Center for Victims of Torture works toward a future in which torture ceases to exist and its victims have hope for a new life. We are an international nonprofit dedicated to healing survivors of torture. We offer rehabilitation services to those who have been tortured, train partners around the world who can prevent and treat torture, and advocate for human rights and an end to torture. We are headquartered in Minnesota, and we have US offices in Georgia and DC, as well as offices in Africa and the Middle East.
Responsibilities:
- Recruitment and Retention of Volunteers and Interns: Screen, place, train, coordinate, and recognize organization volunteers and interns. Conduct background checks. Lead new volunteer and intern orientation sessions. Off-board volunteers and interns as-needed. Coordinate and lead up to 5 training sessions for volunteers and interns per year. Determine content and organize speakers. Build strong on-going relationships with volunteers and interns and encourage their involvement in other aspects of the organization.
- Support of Current Volunteers: Support the systems and structures for on-going volunteer-driven U.S. Clinical Operations volunteer program. Collaborate regularly with lead volunteers who are supporting these efforts. Develop annual budget and manage program expenditures within budget parameters.
- Development of Volunteer Program: Lead the growth and modernization of CVT’s volunteer program, including internships and digital volunteer roles. Leverage technology to advance volunteer/intern program. Expand opportunities for volunteers beyond CVT’s locations in Minneapolis/St. Paul.
- Internal Relationship Building: Provide support to staff members who are working with volunteers and interns in the departments where they are assigned. Liaise with CVT employees in order to facilitate requests and create new volunteer and intern opportunities.
- Recordkeeping: Maintain administrative records and generate reports on volunteer program. Maintain and update volunteer and intern handbook. Liaise with HR and other CVT departments as-needed in order to create and update policies. Complete required documentation for interns.
Qualifications:
Required education, experience, certificates, licenses or registrations
- 3 years of experience coordinating a volunteer program
- Demonstrated experience with public speaking
Preferred education, experience, certificates, licenses or registrations
- Previous professional experience coordinating volunteers in a healthcare setting
- Demonstrated success recruiting, placing and supporting interns (including clinical interns)
- Demonstrated experience growing a volunteer or internship program
Competencies (knowledge, skills and abilities)
- Knowledge of principles of volunteer program management such as recruitment, placement, recognition, retention, recordkeeping and risk management
- Ability to be sensitive and judicious when screening and placing volunteers knowing that the population CVT serves is vulnerable
- Excellent meeting facilitation skills
- Public speaking skills
- Comfortable using a variety of web-based technologies, such as Zoom and databases
- Familiarity with organizations and issues relevant to CVT’s mission
- Ability to develop and maintain professional, collaborative relationships
- Ability to communicate effectively in writing and verbally
- Commitment to engaging in human rights work, and diversity, equity and inclusion efforts within the organization
- Excellent skills in organization, attention to detail and time management (including the ability to meet deadlines)
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite (Outlook, Word and Excel)
Supervisory Responsibilities:This position has no direct staff supervisory responsibilities, but does support the employees who are supervising volunteers and interns in their areas.
