Under the direction of the Reception and Placement Program Manager and in coordination with Catholic Charities Community and Family Services Case Managers, other staff and program partners, the Housing Coordinator ensures housing and facilitates the placement of newly arrived refugees, secondary migrants and all other populations as needed in suitable, safe, and affordable homes. The Housing coordinator develops and maintains a broad and diverse network of affordable and appropriate housing options available to refugees.
Starting Rate: $21.25/hour
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
· Identifies suitable, safe, and affordable homes for incoming refugees, secondary migrants and all other populations.
· Inspects new housing opportunities and ensures that homes are free of visible health and safety hazards, are in good repair, suitable, safe, and affordable according to program and agency guidelines.
· Ensures that any housing violations are addressed and resolved prior to completion of any housing agreement.
· Completes the Housing Safety Checklist to ensure the housing meets all regulatory compliance, program and agency guidelines, and the home is determined to be a safe space.
· Follows up with property managers and clients to ensure apartment maintenance issues are satisfactorily resolved.
· Develops long term housing options for newly arrived clients in various local communities
· Negotiates terms of rental agreement, educating property owners on the benefits and supports available when working with a resettlement agency and the refugee population.
· Secures the lease and provides a copy to the case manager to review with the client
· Conducts outreach and advocacy to potential property owners through attendance and participation at various community groups within Monroe County.
· Develops connection to new landlords, realtors, and property managers
· Follows up with property managers and clients to ensure apartment maintenance issues are satisfactorily resolved.
· Addresses eviction notices with clients and the property owner to resolve, if eviction occurs, new housing is secured.
· Works collaboratively with volunteers who support housing set up.
· Ensures that the prepared apartment is clean, appropriately furnished and in move in condition.
· Ensures that home utilities have been turned on prior to arrival and placement.
· Coordinates with Community Partners on arrival dates of clients and housing set ups.
· Assists in home set ups when needed.
· Provides ongoing housing support, serving as a liaison with the resettlement staff, client, and property manager throughout the 90 day service period.
· Works closely with Reception and Placement Program manager and case workers to identify housing resources and determine client housing needs.
· Attends resettlement staff planning meetings.
· Maintains frequent and regular contact with agency staff to coordinate rental agreements and report on housing issues, home deficiencies, furnishing needs, etc.
· Maintains data of program housing information and financial tracking ( if there are specific data bases that are maintained we should be specific .
· Completes required housing reports.
· Searches for housing related grants and other opportunities related to providing safe and affordable housing.
· Participates in strategic planning, proactively assessing and identifying and planning for program housing needs.
· Supports Cultural Orientation as it relates to the provision of information to newly arrived refugees regarding housing expectations.
· Other duties as requested by the Program Manager.
