POSITION DESCRIPTION
The Digital Literacy Instructor is responsible for developing and teaching a digital literacy curriculum using a student-centered approach designed to help students acquire competency in the use of basic personal technology all the way through mastery of more complex tools like Microsoft programs such as word, excel, power point, and the different Google applications (Google chrome, Google Gmail, Google Drive, Google You Tube), and Introduction to Internet browsers. The Digital Literacy Instruction is designed to assist students to acquire or improve their computer knowledge, and to gain the skills necessary to manage their daily computer technology needs aimed to gain employment or obtain employment advancement.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- The Digital Literacy Instructor position may include, but is not limited to, the following tasks and responsibilities:
- Develop daily technology lesson plans that follow best practices in instructional design by including clear objectives, instructional activities with differentiated instruction, and assessments that are appropriate to the skill level and needs of the students in the program.
- Following the technology curriculum, ensure coursework supports acquisition of basic skills such as typing and mouse skills, utilizing diverse technology platforms including computers, tablets, and educational software. Computer classes must cover introductory use of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Windows, Google Apps for Education, Internet, and E-mail.
- Incorporate a variety of technologies into instruction including technologies used in work settings, such as photocopiers, scanners, and fax machines; and technologies used in personal settings such as tablets, cell phone/telephone applications (e.g. voicemail, texting, camera, and videos), and digital/video cameras.
- Design authentic learning experiences that develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to be effective workers and community members/citizens.
- Teach daily digital literacy and practical technology classes.
- Provide quality instruction that fosters an academic learning climate, actively supports teaching and learning.
- Provide a safe and orderly learning environment in the classroom.
- Prepare class syllabus, weekly lesson plans and classroom presentation in support of students achieving educational goals.
- Regularly evaluate student progress utilizing quizzes, exams, or other type of qualitative or quantitative evaluation.
- Deliver instruction to students using a variety of methods; adjust teaching styles to meet the needs of a diverse student population using adult learning theory/principles.
- Keep accurate attendance records in two forms, a daily sign-in sheet for participants and a classroom record.
- Develop, research, review, and/or revise curriculum; select materials for instructional delivery and evaluate alternative delivery methods of instruction.
- Attend all curriculum meetings and professional development sessions.
- Provide instruction in the evening schedule.
- Is present for a minimum of 95% of scheduled classes.
- Motivate students to attend class to achieve an acceptable rate of attendance and retention.
- Receive positive student feedback in teachers’ evaluations.
- Demonstrate ability to work on a team as well as independently with minimal supervision.
- Exhibit professional courtesy in dealing with program participants, colleagues, team members, and the public.
QUALIFICATIONS, EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor’s degree preferred.
- Two years’ experience instructing adults.
- Bilingual Spanish / English required.
- Experience with contextualized instruction, non-traditional, student-centered approach to instruction experience preferred.
- Experience working with a nonprofit organization is a plus.
- Ability to maintain a high sense of confidentiality.
- Exceptional organization and time management skills.
- Above average “customer” service approach.
- Advanced skills with Microsoft Office Suite and Google applications.
- Strategies and tools for career navigation and exploration.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Nature of work requires an ability to operate standard business office equipment. Requires ability to communicate and exchange information, collect, compile and prepare work documents, as well as set-up and maintain work files.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Majority of work performed in a general office environment. Position requires availability for extended hours plus non-traditional hours may be required to perform job duties. Also requires participation and attendance at organization sponsored events and meetings.
