JOB SUMMARY: The ESOL Instructor teaches English as a Second Language (ESOL) from a Beginner to an Intermediate level. The position prepares a comprehensive ESOL lesson plan, teaches ESOL to adults based on Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) standards, keeps a record of student attendance, and attends bi-annual trainings offered by the Agency or the Montgomery Coalition for Adult English Literacy (MCAEL). The position also collaborates with registration, testing and student surveys and evaluation as needed.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Teach English as a Second Language to adults with emphasis on everyday usage (life skills), reading, writing and comprehension and verbal skills.
- Attend mandatory Teacher orientation training as well as other trainings offered by the Agency or MCAEL (twice in each academic year).
- Prepare lessons, quizzes, exams based primarily on the materials covered in the English textbook; use different learning concepts that include daily in-class practice problems and learning concept; administer tests and introduce terminology relating to life skills.
- Design activities to make learning fun and interesting.
- Maintain accurate records of student’s progress and lesson plan.
- Attend regular meetings with students and coordinators.
- Communicate pertinent information about students or programs to the Program Supervisor.
- Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE:
- High School diploma or GED.
- Graduate Certificate Program in Adult Education and/or experience and knowledge of teaching a diverse adult population.
- One (1) year experience teaching and/or working with adults.
- Experience working with the Latino community.
SKILLS and COMPETENCIES:
- Bilingual, Spanish-English; Fluent in English language.
- Ability to design and apply lesson plans using program’s curriculum.
