Instituto Health Science Career Academy along with Chicago Public Schools (CPS) has set ambitious goals to ensure that every child-in every school and every neighborhood—has access to a world-class learning experience from birth, resulting in graduation from high school college- and career-ready. In alignment with CPS/ISBE, our school strives to provide high quality and specially designed instructional supports and services for all students with disabilities within the least restrictive environment. We work collaboratively with the goal of improving the academic achievement of all students with disabilities by ensuring they receive meaningful and relevant access to grade level core instruction within the school. Teachers provide appropriate, effective, and culturally relevant instruction for grades 9-12 aligned to SAT, AVID College Readiness, and state standards. IHSCA ensures that students are provided a safe learning environment that supports student social-emotional growth as well as academics.
POSITION DESCRIPTION
The Instituto Health Sciences Career Academy Charter School (IHSCA) social worker is the link between home, school, and the community and will report to the school principal. As a member of the educational team, the school social worker promotes students' academic and social success by providing specialized services that may include: assessment of student needs through a variety of methods, treatment of mental and emotional disorders, individual and group therapeutic services, crisis prevention and intervention; and work with students in both general education and special education settings.
The IHSCA school social worker provides advocacy for students, parents, and the industry network by providing education and training for parents and guardians, referring families to resources, providing professional case management, and collaborating with community organizations. The social worker also participates in and aids the development of policy implementation.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Developing and implementing a school wide social emotional learning curriculum through experiential learning for Tier I needs
- Designing and administering universal screenings and assessments to students
- Developing prevention and intervention plans to address student social-emotional needs
- Utilizing data to inform policy formation and program development
- Providing the Assistant Principal for Student Affairs with quarterly and monthly reports on student and program progress.
- Implementing a school-wide positive behavioral intervention system in conjunction with the interventions team
- Provide Tier II and Tier III services to students as necessary
- Designing and implementing behavior management plans
- Developing a community resources book in collaboration with the nurse
- Developing community partnerships that will enhance student services on and off site
- Facilitating workshops on issues that relate to social-emotional growth such as decision making, conflict resolution, academic performance, and healthy habits of mind and work
- Collaborating with teachers to monitor student progress
- Monitoring student progress via tools such as PowerSchool, Impact, and other methods
- Ensuring continuous communication with parents
- Providing parents with learning workshops related to student’s social-emotional growth
- Increasing academic success of students through group counseling and case by case individual counseling
- Leading crisis interventions that are directly related to student’s wellbeing and mental health
- Providing school wide training on mandated reporting
- Sponsoring extracurricular activities
- Following all IHSCA school-wide standards regarding teacher behaviors
- Adhering to all IHSCA electronic and web-based rules and restrictions
- Other duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE/EDUCATION
- License to practice as a social worker or counselor required (LCSW); Master’s degree in social work preferred
- Five years or more experience working with high school students and their families
- Three years of experience in youth clinical and case management with youth and families
- Three years of experience working with youth living in difficult circumstances
- Knowledge of dropout prevention programs and city wide initiatives
- Experience in program planning and evaluation
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Ability to speak both Spanish and English fluently preferred
- Ability to maintain a high sense of confidentiality
- Ability to work with a wide variety of people
- Ability to work as a team player and as an individual with minimal supervision
- Exceptional organization and time management skills
- Above average customer service attitude
- Ability to maintain composure under pressure
- Dependable and punctual
- Strong project management skills, attention to detail and effective management of multiple projects at one time

- Advanced skills with Microsoft Office and the Internet
