Overview
Duties
Administration and Program Management
- Collaborate with the Center Cluster Dean and AVP, Academic Programs to set measurable goals for the Center each year and evaluate progress toward achieving these goals.
- Develop and manage the Center's annual budget and periodic forecasts; approve all Center expenditures; review expenditures monthly and meet all financial deadlines.
- Strategically plan and manage the Nice Center staff, with appropriate review and input from the Center Cluster Dean and Academic Affairs leadership.
- Coordinate Center operations, special programs, and student affairs with staff by receiving regular updates and taking part in decision-making as necessary.
- Ensure collaboration of the Nice Center with the IES Abroad Customized Programs Department in Chicago, including planning potential programs and administering programs once on-site.
- Set regular office hours and be available to consult with students, faculty, and staff.
- Conduct annual performance appraisals of IES Abroad Nice staff members.
- Foster an atmosphere of teamwork, mutual support, and enthusiasm among the IES Abroad staff and faculty in Nice.
- In consultation with the Center Cluster Dean, AVP, and Chicago Academics staff, create/develop new programs, courses, intercultural opportunities, etc., and revise existing ones as needed.
- In conjunction with Center staff, ensure collaboration of the Nice Center with the IES Abroad Internships Programs in Chicago.
- Ensure that all Center staff and faculty are trained on IES Abroad protocols and policies and adhere to all guidelines.
Academic Management
- Provide an ongoing implementation of IES Abroad quality standards based on the IES Abroad MAP© series and IES Abroad policies and protocols.
- Collaborate with the Center Cluster Dean and AVP for Academic Programs to enhance and revise the Center's academic programs and develop new programs at the Center.
- Ensure the implementation of guidelines and recommendations from the IES Abroad Academic Council and Curriculum Committee.
- In conjunction with the Academic Coordinator, conduct ongoing evaluations of the Center's academic programs in Nice, and collaborate with the Center Cluster Dean and AVP for Academic Programs to propose and implement suggestions for improvements.
- Oversee the recruitment, hiring, training, and evaluation of all IES Abroad faculty to teach IES Abroad courses, assuring that such hiring meets legal and other requirements in France.
- Supervise the registration of students in courses, internships, and assistantships in partnership with Center staff members.
- In conjunction with the Center's Academic Coordinator, regularly meet with students each term to discuss their academic progress, internship duties, and intercultural development and assist them with support as needed.
- Promote the effective use of educational technology in the classroom and the effective implementation of Moodle.
- Maintain a high level of academic integrity at the Center by overseeing the implementation of IES Abroad academic and other policies, reviewing and responding to grade appeals, and assisting students with special educational needs and concerns.
- Promote professional development opportunities for staff and faculty.
- Collaborate with colleagues in the France Centers Cluster on strategic academic initiatives and other shared interests across Centers.
Communication
- Meet regularly via phone or Zoom with the Center Cluster Dean and the Academic Affairs Leadership Team to assess and improve Center-related issues.
- Stay abreast of academic developments in France and the United States to maintain a timely, relevant curriculum in Implement training for faculty and staff to keep the entire Center up to date on these developments.
- Provide IES Abroad Chicago with information about the Center regularly, including, but not limited to, financial reports, promotional materials, information about societal and educational trends in France, information about labor requirements in France, and cultural information.
- Collaborate with IES Abroad staff in Chicago, fellow IES Abroad Center Directors, colleagues within the France Centers Cluster, and other stakeholders on workshops, training seminars, intercultural projects, and other strategic initiatives defined in collaboration with the Center Cluster Dean, Academic Affairs leadership, and senior management in Chicago.
- Supervise the preparation of materials for the France Centers Cluster Review Self-study and Report and Strategic Planning documents for the IES Abroad Nice Center.
Outreach, Public Relations, and Marketing
- Develop and directly maintain strong partnerships with local partner universities and institutions. Serve as the chief facilitator of communications between local partners and interested parties at the IES Abroad Chicago office.
- Represent IES Abroad Nice Center before local and regional French authorities and in the local community.
- Actively participate in the IES Abroad Annual Conference and Center Directors' meetings, including making presentations as requested.
- Represent the IES Abroad Nice Center on visits to colleges and universities to educate faculty and staff on the Nice Center's programs and the mission, goals, and practices of IES Abroad.
- Collaborate with IES Abroad staff in Chicago and the Center Cluster Dean on marketing materials, pre-departure materials, visa support materials, and other student materials.
Student Life
- Coordinate the local staff and lead the on-site orientation of students to Nice, the IES Abroad Center, and local partner institutions.
- Supervise staff in creating student activities, field trips, and field studies, ensuring the intercultural effectiveness and relevance of field trips and field studies to the IES Abroad and Center missions and academic goals.
- Supervise staff to locate, develop, and manage internships for students.
- In partnership with the Student Affairs Coordinator, ensure the quality of housing for students, assess and improve housing options, and deal with problems and manage situations that need immediate attention.
- Enforce IES Abroad discipline policies where necessary.
Emergency Response and Crisis Management
- Design, review/revise, and implement local crisis management plans per IES Abroad policy.
- Conduct emergency drills each term in collaboration with the IES Abroad Crisis Management Team.
- Oversee management of 24/7 telephone emergency coverage to respond to student emergencies, including responsibilities for carrying IES Nice emergency phone on a rotating basis with other staff members.
- Respond rapidly to student crises by accessing local resources and coordinating with the IES Abroad Crisis Management Team, the Dean of Students Office, the AVP for Academic Programs, and others where appropriate.
- Proactively notify the IES Abroad Crisis Management Team, Dean of Students office, and AVP for Academic Programs of local emergencies or areas of concern that may affect the safety of IES Abroad students, staff, and faculty.
Requirements
- Ph.D. in a relevant academic discipline (business, humanities, social sciences, STEM, etc.).
- 5 to 10 years of progressively responsible managerial experience.
- Relevant management experience in a study abroad program and prior contact with U.S. university students greatly preferred.
- Teaching experience at the university level is greatly preferred.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Familiarity with the nature, organization, and customs of higher education in France and the U.S.
- Ability to work well with students from U.S. colleges and universities.
- Excellent administrative, organizational, and problem-solving abilities.
- Excellent team-building skills.
- Experience in the development and management of complex budgets; not-for-profit budget management experience is desirable.
- Strong commitment to international education, intercultural issues, and a strong interest in student affairs preferred.
- Interest in the academic and intercultural growth of university students.
- Student-centered philosophy and sensitivity to issues of diversity.
- Must be able to lawfully accept employment in France at the time an offer of employment is extended.
- Ability to travel throughout France and the region and to the U.S. on occasion.
