Founded in 1977 to help Latino’s learn basic skills, pass the civil service exam and obtain higher paying post office jobs, Instituto has grown to a flourishing educational center serving over 14,000 Chicago families per year.
POSITION DESCRIPTION
The Math Instructor is responsible for developing and teaching a contextualized curriculum using a student-centered approach designed to help students advance their basic skills. Instruction is designed to accomplish three goals: improve basic skills in reading, writing, and/or math, obtain industry credentials, and obtain employment.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Participate in the design and implementation of high quality curriculum and instruction for adult learners that is flexible, student-centered, standards-based, rigorous, and contextualized.
- Prepare class syllabus, weekly lesson plans and classroom presentation in support of students achieving educational goals.
- Regularly evaluate student progress utilizing quizzes, exams, performance portfolios, or other type of qualitative or quantitative evaluation.
- Integrate College and Career Readiness skills, and computer literacy skills.
- Deliver instruction to students using a variety of methods; adjust teaching styles to meet the needs of a diverse student population using adult learning theory/principles and content knowledge.
- Keep accurate attendance records in two forms, a daily sign-in sheet for participants and a classroom record.
- Develop, research, review, and/or revise curriculum; select materials for instructional delivery and evaluate alternative delivery methods of instruction.
- Attend all curriculum meetings and professional development sessions.
- Provide instruction in the evening schedule.
- Attend 95% of scheduled classes.
- Motivate students to attend class, as measured by an acceptable rate of attendance and retention.
- Receive student feedback in evaluations conducted twice annually.
QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE/EDUCATION
- Bachelor’s Degree, Master’s preferred.
- Two years’ experience instructing adults.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, Bilingual Spanish / English preferred.
- Non-traditional, student-centered approaches to instruction with an ability to maintain cohesive, multi-level diverse groups; adaptable and responsive to Instructional Coaching.
- Experience working with a membership or volunteer environment preferred, nonprofit organization ideal.
- Ability to maintain a high sense of confidentiality.
- Strong content knowledge in math.
- Exceptional organization and time management skills.
- Above average customer service approach.
- Experience with contextualized instruction.
- Knowledge of college structure, systems, and processes.
- Advanced skills with Microsoft Office Suite and Google applications
- Demonstrate teamwork ability.
- Exhibit professional courtesy in dealing with program participants, colleagues, team members, and the public.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Nature of work requires an ability to operate standard business office equipment. Requires ability to communicate and exchange information, collect, compile and prepare work documents, set-up and maintain work files.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Majority of work performed in a general office environment. Position requires availability for extended hours plus non-traditional hours required to perform job duties. Also requires participation and attendance at organization sponsored events and meetings.
