Instituto del Progreso Latino is a community organization whose mission is to contribute to the fullest development of Latino(a) immigrants and their families through education, training and employment that fosters participation in the changing U.S. society while preserving cultural identity and dignity. Founded in 1977 to help Latino’s learn basic skills, pass the civil service exam and obtain higher paying post office jobs, Instituto has grown to a flourishing educational center serving over 14,000 Chicago families per year.
POSITION DESCRIPTION
The Child Instructor reports to the Family Literacy and After School Manager and is responsible for planning, preparing, and carrying out age-appropriate learning activities for children aged 6-13; coordinating and carrying out family activities, maintaining accurate and timely program records; and attending training and professional development activities as indicated by the supervisor.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Adheres to the position schedule which consists of evening and weekend hours.
- Prepares and carries out homework assistance, STEM lessons, social justice and life skills projects, and other learning activities, with children aged 6-13. The curriculums/guidelines will include the Illinois State Board of Education K-3 learning skills standards, the UnidosUS CHISPA STEM lessons, and the BE SAFE life skills activities.
- Attends field trips, community service events, and other activities outside of the agency as needed.
- Instructs children and measures learning gains with approved evaluation tools.
- Assists in carrying out parent and family activities on the programmed dates.
- Follows registration and attendance protocols.
- Deals with disciplinary issues between children and their parents as necessary.
- Organizes and maintains the child instruction area to provide a safe and apt educational environment.
- Carries out job-related duties as may be directed by immediate supervisor.
- Exhibit professional courtesy in dealing with program participants, colleagues, team members, and the public.
- Show enthusiasm to assist students and their parents.
- Attends no less than 95% of scheduled classes.
- Attend further professional development as indicated in employee evaluations.
- Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATION, EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
- A.A. degree with no less than 12 credits in childhood and early childhood education or foreign equivalent preferred; some college credits
- 1 year minimum in children’s educational programming or early child teaching
- Ability to maintain a high sense of confidentiality
- Able to work with a wide variety of people
- Team player and willing to take on multiple tasks at once and independent worker, requires minimal supervision
- Exceptional organization and time management skills
- Above average “customer” service attitude
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, bilingual English/Spanish
- Strong telephone skills and ability to maintain composure under pressure
- Dependable and punctual
- Strong project management skills, attention to detail and effective management of multiple projects at one time
- Ability to adhere to deadlines, react to unpredictable events quickly and efficiently, be resourceful, manage conflict and challenges
- Advanced skills with Microsoft Office, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and the Internet

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Nature of work requires an ability to operate standard business office equipment. Requires ability to communicate and exchange information, collect, compile and prepare work documents, set-up and maintain work files. Approximately 50% of time spent standing, some lifting (under 30 lbs.)
WORKING CONDITIONS
Majority of work performed in a general school environment. Position requires availability for extended hours plus non-traditional hours required to perform job duties. Also requires participation and attendance at organization sponsored events and meetings.
