Maintenance Mechanic –
This Maintenance Mechanic Apprentice position is offered under the terms of the Stanford University and SEIU Apprenticeship Program. The purpose of this program is to train an Apprentice to be a Building Maintenance Mechanic.
Job Responsibilities:
- Work under general supervision and perform maintenance tasks of substantial complexity.
- Employees in this classification typically work within prescribed procedures but may make unique and innovative modifications as necessary to safely and expeditiously discharge their assigned work.
- Work may be spot-checked while in progress or inspected upon completion.
- May work alone, and/or as a member of a crew.
SUMMARY OF THIS POSITION: Reporting to the Assistant Director of HVAC and performing work under direction, the Apprentice performs/assists with performing all aspects of building mechanical and electrical systems including troubleshooting, repairs, preventive maintenance, and installations for all Residential and Dining Enterprises facilities.
Air Conditioning
Under direction, checks, maintains, repairs, and installs all air conditioning-related equipment, and evaporative cooling systems.
Electrical Repair and Maintenance
Under direction, performs electrical work as required related to servicing HVAC equipment; typical line voltage of 120V and 208V AC, low voltage controls. Follows proper lock out/tag out procedures.
Skills and Abilities:
- Ability to follow oral and written directions.
- Demonstrated good mechanical skills.
- Knowledge and ability to properly use hand tools.
- Ability to perform precision work demonstrating precise fine motor skills.
- Ability to logically follow prescribed troubleshooting sequences.
- Ability to plan own work, tools, and equipment needed.
- Ability to master cutting, bending, soldering, threading, and assembling pipe and fittings.
- Complies with all safety protocols and procedures including using PPE appropriately.
Minimum Qualifications:
- At least 18 years old.
- Ability to perform heavy manual labor in all types of outside weather conditions.
- Must possess a high school diploma or equivalent.
- Must pass an aptitude test (math, English, and critical thinking) with a score of at least 80%.
Certificates and Licenses Required: Valid California Class C Noncommercial Driver’s License.
