Precourt Institute for Energy
As part of the Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability, the Precourt Institute for Energy concentrates the talents of the University on energy research and education, from basic science and technology to policy and business. We disseminate research results and help the University develop energy-literate leaders as part of its educational mission. We work across campus in all seven of Stanford’s schools. We also build collaborations globally with industry, other research institutions, government, and civic organizations in pursuit of sustainable, affordable, secure energy for all people.
Explore Energy Program
Explore Energy is a student engagement and energy education program under the Precourt Institute for Energy. It serves as a one-stop resource and nexus of connection for all students who are interested in energy—aggregating classes, majors, events, research, student clubs, internships, and jobs across campus. Courses, fellowships, mentorship, and a residential living program are also offered under the Explore Energy umbrella at Precourt for both undergraduates and graduates of any major, providing opportunities for students to learn about energy and sustainability both in an academic and an applied setting. The Explore Energy program has an advisory board of Stanford faculty and staff.
Seeking Assistant Director, Explore Energy
Stanford Energy’s Precourt Institute for Energy seeks an Explore Energy Assistant Director to develop and lead a comprehensive program for energy education and experiential learning. The Explore Energy program is Precourt’s student engagement program that serves all students across Stanford’s seven schools. In addition to managing existing programming, this role will support key areas of integration and expansion of the Explore Energy program. The Assistant Director will also have management and supervisory responsibilities. The candidate should be a strategic leader with knowledge of the energy field, an enthusiasm to work with students, and experience with community building.
Your Responsibilities will include:
- Manage 100% Explore Energy program manager and one 50% program manager over the Shultz Energy Fellowships, in addition to supervising our student hires and peer advisors.
- Grow and execute the comprehensive Explore Energy program, including successfully integrating with Stanford’s schools, departments, and other campus educational streams.
- Steward the Precourt’s summer programs and student engagement offerings.
- Oversee and help execute the planning, programming, and continuous improvement of Energy@Stanford & SLAC, our annual week-long conference for 130 students in September.
- Champion the Explore Energy House and support/advise its current Resident Fellow.
- Oversee and manage the budget for Explore Energy, including working with program managers to assign and track budget for existing programs, as well as forecasting for program expansion and new programs.
- Support the Precourt Institute Director(s) development efforts to expand funding for the Explore Energy Program, including creating high-impact deliverables and pitch decks.
- Nurture and grow the Explore Energy Network and community, a working group of university programs and student groups offering opportunities for students to learn and explore various aspects of energy.
- Build out Explore Energy’s off-campus relationships with non-profit, industry, etc. to enhance and amplify the opportunities we can bring to students.
- Engage undergraduates and graduates early and connect them with departments, energy programs, and opportunities across the university.
- Mentor undergraduate and graduate students and connect them to advising resources on and off-campus, including connecting them with the extensive energy alumni network.
- Serve as the Precourt Institute’s principal student program liaison.
- Develop and execute strategic plans that animate Explore Energy’s mission and vision.
- Oversee and manage the Explore Energy Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability & Learning (MEAL) Plan, including collecting, analyzing, and reviewing data.
- Oversee the Explore Energy Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) Action Plan and facilitate and track progress towards Action Items.
- Build out tools to personalize the interface for students to navigate energy opportunities.
- Continue to build awareness and visibility on campus, including through student outreach (tabling, events, etc.), innovative communications, and presentations.
- Coach and mentor program staff.
- Work with the Explore Energy Managing Director on team-wide efforts and culture building.
To be successful in this position, you will need:
- Bachelor’s degree and five years of relevant experience, or combination of education and relevant experience.
