Senior Director, Finance
This position supports the oversight of finance and accounting functions at Catholic Charities, Diocese of Cleveland, ensuring alignment with the organization's mission and values. Key duties include overseeing financial operations, implementing best practices, guiding budgeting processes, and managing financial statement preparation and analysis. The role is responsible for balance sheet reconciliations, year-end audits, funding requests, cash flow management, and maintaining relationships with external funding sources.
The position also provides strategic direction for the department, supervises finance staff, and ensures effective communication across the organization. Applicants should have a Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration, with a Master’s or CPA preferred. At least 7 years of relevant financial experience is required, ideally in nonprofit organizations or human service agencies. Strong leadership, communication, and analytical skills are essential.
Responsibilities:
- Ensure that the activities of this position and relevant functions are consistent with the mission, vision, and values of Catholic Charities, Diocese of Cleveland.
- Assists in oversight of the overall direction, coordination and evaluation of finance and accounting areas.
- Guide documentation, implementation and adherence to best practice accounting policies, standards and procedures for financial and operational controls.
- Collaborate with all segments of management responsible for policy or action. Make recommendations for improving the effectiveness of policy or practices.
- Lead annual operating and capital budgeting process.
- Oversee development of and furnish as needed comprehensive financial statements; provide analysis and interpretation of financial results.
- Be primarily responsible for review of balance sheet reconciliations, including bank reconciliations, prepared by staff
- Assist with the timely completion of year-end audited financial statements and 990 filings.
- Coordinate and review funding requests.
- Maintain positive communications with external funding sources.
- Oversee management of cash flow, ensuring accuracy in billing and timely collections of accounts receivable and proper management of vendor payments.
- Provide strategic direction for the department; recommend major objectives and policies for the organization and participate in the development of departmental priorities.
- Assist in the management of banking and investment relationships and accounts.
- May produce statistical reports, analyses, and exhibits for internal use by other management staff and the board, and for external reporting to federal, state, and local funding and regulatory agencies.
- Provide direction and support to finance and accounting staff. Hire, mentor and evaluate staff. As appropriate, guide larger multi-disciplinary teams outside the finance/accounting department.
- Keep abreast of current trends and practices in field of expertise.
- Assume special projects, activities and responsibilities from time to time as directed.
- Ensure that effective communications are maintained within areas of responsibility.
- Perform other duties as necessary to accomplish objectives.
Requirements:
- Combination of education and experience normally represented by a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance or Business Administration, with Master’s Degree or CPA preferred; with at least 7 years of previous financial experience ideally gained through increasingly responsible management positions within finance or in the administration of a human service agency.
- Familiarity with non-profit organizations and structures preferred.
- Knowledge of various funding sources such as ODADAS, ODMH, ODJFS, CEOGC.
- Knowledge of accounting concepts, techniques and principles and the ability to apply knowledge.
- Skill in analyzing and interpreting financial data.
- Must have excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills.
- Ability to effectively and productively work with people of very diverse economic, cultural and administrative backgrounds.
- Ability to supervise professional personnel.
- Ability to read, analyze and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures or governmental regulations.
- Must be able to work independently from general instructions.
- Must have a good working knowledge of computers and Microsoft Office and financial software, along with considerable knowledge of Information Systems.
- Must have Ohio Driver’s License and reliable means of transportation for local travel.
