Position Summary
We are seeking a passionate follower of Jesus and skilled cook who desires to make a meaningful impact in our community. The ideal candidate leads with a servant’s heart, inspires others, and can effectively rally teams of staff and volunteers to extend dignity and respect to individuals experiencing homelessness: one meal at a time.
As a Cook at the San Diego Rescue Mission, you will be a vital member of our Kitchen Team, playing a key role in caring for our students and guests. Core responsibilities include leading kitchen staff and volunteers, planning and preparing meals, overseeing daily kitchen operations (opening and closing), and ensuring strict compliance with food safety and handling standards.
Key Responsibilities

Plan, prepare, and cook nutritious meals for students, guests, and the broader community

Open and close the kitchen facility, maintaining a high standard of cleanliness, organization, and readiness

Lead, train, and support kitchen staff and volunteers, fostering a positive, team-oriented environment

Manage inventory, coordinate with suppliers, and ensure appropriate ordering and storage of food and supplies

Ensure full compliance with food-handling regulations, health codes, and safety standards

Engage graciously with students, guests, and volunteers, actively supporting the mission to serve individuals experiencing homelessness
QualificationsRequirements

Minimum of three years of professional cooking experience

Current Food Handler’s Card and valid California Driver’s License

Demonstrated ability to manage kitchen operations, including supervising staff and volunteers

Strong passion for serving others and making a meaningful impact in the community

Excellent organizational, communication, and leadership skills

Proficiency in a variety of cooking techniques and cuisines

Solid understanding of food hygiene practices and health and safety regulations
