Position Summary
The Lilly Family School of Philanthropy seeks an exceptional colleague to join the faculty of the first school of its kind. The School is particularly interested in research and teaching on diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice ( DEIJ ) in philanthropy. The School’s community engages a plurality of definitions of philanthropy that encompass but also go beyond the traditional “voluntary action for public good,” – embracing the experiences and actions of all, not only those with money and time to give, or foundations and wealthy donors. Research on philanthropy and justice may include a focus on, for example, but is not limited to: non-profits, charitable contributions, volunteerism, fundraising, philanthropic foundations, informal pro-social behavior, along with traits and motivations related to those behaviors. Applications submitted by December 1, 2023 will receive best consideration. However, the position will remain open until filled. This position is a 10-month open-rank tenured or tenure-track faculty position. The successful candidate will have an existing or developing research portfolio on topics related to DEIJ . The incumbent will conduct research and facilitate the translation of new knowledge into improved practice, and create a thriving intellectual community to attract outstanding students to engage in discovery for practice. The new colleague will be expected to contribute to the faculty’s interest in diversifying the curriculum, support service opportunities focused on DEIJ within the school, and explore frontier issues in the field that connect DEIJ to the roles that philanthropy plays in society. In addition to working with faculty colleagues and students, the incumbent will have opportunities to collaborate on research and outreach with the Mays Family Institute on Diverse Philanthropy, Lake Institute on Faith and Giving, the Women’s Philanthropy Institute, The Fund Raising School, and the Muslim Philanthropy Initiative, as well as the Research Department known for researching Giving USA and The Philanthropy Panel Study, among many other projects. Located on the campus of Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis ( IUPUI ), the Lilly Family School of Philanthropy builds on the strength of thirty years of research, training and outreach activity. Collaborating closely with the IU O’Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs and the IU School of Liberal Arts, among others, the Lilly Family School’s twenty core and over thirty affiliate faculty members draw on an expansive and collegial community of scholars and practitioners from a multiplicity of disciplines devoted to the serious study of philanthropy. Degree programs include the PhD, MA, and BA degrees in Philanthropic Studies, as well as the Professional Doctorate in Philanthropic Leadership. The School also hosts 12 named faculty positions in various areas of philanthropy. The duties of the Professor of Philanthropic Studies will include teaching and mentoring students as well as conducting research, publishing, and providing service to the School, campus, and the field of Philanthropic Studies. Successful candidates must also demonstrate evidence of high- quality teaching. The Lilly Family School of Philanthropy is located on the Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis ( IUPUI ) campus. The School has 20 core faculty and an additional 46 affiliate and adjunct faculty from 21 disciplines on the IUPUI and IU Bloomington campuses, all with current, active teaching and research interests in philanthropic, nonprofit, and civil society studies. Building on the Center on Philanthropy’s 30 year history, the School values a multi-disciplinary approach to understanding philanthropy with faculty appointees trained in the humanities, social sciences, and other fields. It offers degrees at the Ph.D., professional doctorate, masters, and undergraduate levels to educate the next generation of scholars and professionals. The School’s research environment includes internal grants to catalyze new research, the Lake Institute on Faith and Giving, the Women’s Philanthropy Institute, The Fund Raising School, the Mays Institute on Diversity and Inclusion, the Philanthropy Panel Study, the Payton Philanthropic Studies Library, and the Ruth Lilly Archives. The Center for Service and Learning provides resources for civic engagement and service learning components in courses.
