Job Purpose
As a Horticulturist Assistant you will play a key role in maintaining the beauty, safety, and functionality of our community grounds year-round. You will perform both routine and project-based landscaping and maintenance tasks, ensuring a welcoming environment for residents, staff, and visitors. This position requires a blend of physical skill, technical knowledge, and excellent customer service. Whether you’re experienced or just getting started, we welcome candidates who take pride in their work. Training will be provided for the right individual!
Hours: Fulltime 40 hours a week / 07:30 am - 4:00 pm (flexible schedule)

What You’ll Do
Core Maintenance Activities (60–80%)
- Growing Season: Prune trees and shrubs, plant annuals, perennials, and trees, water, mulch, edge beds, till soil, remove weeds, mow lawns, fertilize, and apply pesticides when needed.
- Snow Season: Remove snow from sidewalks, driveways, and parking lots; apply de-icing/anti-icing chemicals as needed; operate snow removal equipment; respond to on-call snow events
- Everyday: Operate mechanical equipment including skid steers, zero-turn mowers, small tractors, RTVs, push mowers, brush cutters, string trimmers, chainsaws, snow blowers, and other small engine equipment.
- Daily: Work with a range of equipment: like mowers, small tractors, utility vehicles, and handheld tools, to help keep everything looking its best! Don’t worry, we can help train the right candidate if you don’t have experience on all of the machines!
- Maintain effective relationships with colleagues, residents, families, volunteers, vendors, and the public.
- Respond to resident work orders promptly while upholding landscaping standards and proper procedures.
- Meet continuous quality improvement standards set by the Plant Operations Department.
Projects & Corrective Maintenance (20%)
- Complete preventative and corrective grounds maintenance duties as directed.
- Lead small projects independently under the guidance of the Lead Horticulturist.
Operational Tasks (10–20%)
- Assist the Maintenance Department with large team tasks, including set-up for events or moving assets.
- Perform basic preventative maintenance on equipment (daily inspections, oil changes, blade/paddle adjustments).
- Ensure work areas are safe, clean, and organized for residents, staff, and visitors.
Other Responsibilities (>10%)
- Participate in a rotating weekend on-call schedule for emergency response.
- Attend required in-services and continuing education programs.
- Perform minor electrical and plumbing repairs as directed.
- Complete additional duties as assigned by the Lead Horticulturist.
What You’ll Need

• Excellent communication skills and a positive, customer-focused attitude.
• The ability to work on your own and alongside a team when needed.
• Work-ready attire (we’ll provide guidance—personal tools and PPE aren’t needed unless approved).
