About the Opportunity:
NFF’s Financing team provides loans to nonprofit organizations for their real estate and working capital needs with a commitment to ensuring Black, Indigenous, and communities of color and their leaders have access to and control of the funds they need to meet their goals. Currently, NFF manages around $400 million of financing assets, primarily loans to nonprofit organizations in the education, healthcare, human service, and housing sectors.
We are seeking a Manager, Portfolio Management to join our portfolio management team. The Manager, Portfolio Management is part of the Financing team providing capital and ensuring that NFF is deploying needed capital in ways that reflect our community-centered approach in a timely and expeditious manner. The Manager, Portfolio Management will manage client relationships for a portfolio of loans and will collect and review financial reporting and compliance, conduct risk management, perform financial and organizational assessments, follow industry trends and risks, and respond to client needs such as requests for modifications or extensions.
This role will be critical in assessing our lending portfolio's financial health while empowering and supporting the lending and technical assistance needs of clients throughout all points of the process from loan application to loan closing. The position will contribute to our strategic direction of supporting community-centered nonprofits led by and serving Black, Indigenous, and people of color. The preference is for the position to be in commutable distance to one of NFF’s office locations which are Boston, Los Angeles, New York, Oakland, and Philadelphia. Remote locations will be considered. Our offices have re-opened, and staff can opt into in-person work as desired and based on the needs of the role. There is potential for up to 10% travel, which will consist of client visits, local/national conferences, and travel to NFF office for staff retreats.
The Manager, Portfolio Management will report to the Director, Manager, Portfolio Management who is based in San Francisco, CA.
What you’ll do:
Relationship Management
- Develop and nurture relationships with new and existing clients and support them once loans have closed.
- Lead conversations with clients in a way that demonstrates empathy and garners understanding of their experiences and needs, including those who have faced barriers to equitable access of capital.
- Identify opportunities for NFF to provide portfolio clients with additional financing and/or connect clients to other sources of capital.
Portfolio Management
- Conduct and review analysis of loan health as part of timely regular monitoring of each loan including risk ratings.
- Structure and negotiate loan renewal terms that reflect the needs of clients.
- Provide loan modifications and extensions and connect clients to technical assistance and other NFF resources as appropriate and available.
- Proactively identify loans that show signs of deterioration in credit quality and work with the Director, Portfolio Management and Director, Head of Credit to develop strategies to support the client and mitigate risk of further deterioration and loan loss.
Strategy & Market Development
- Assist in business development activities, including supporting additional financing requests for existing clients, meetings with lending partners, and conversations and attendance at external events.
- Collaborate with the Financing team in building NFF’s brand by representing NFF externally on panels and webinars with lending partners.
Who you are:
- You have a minimum of five years of professional work experience in the nonprofit or financial services industry and are proficient in credit analysis and loan structuring
- You have a strong relationship-building approach with the ability to center the needs of clients and communities
- You possess strong project management skills with demonstrated success managing multiple projects
- You have strong analytical skills and can present complex analytics in an accessible manner
- You have an aptitude for problem-solving and are able to identify challenges and provide solutions
- You maintain a high level of integrity and are able to handle sensitive information in a confidential manner
- You are flexible, adaptable, and willing to pivot on short notice to meet the organization’s needs
- You are committed to continuous improvement and demonstrate a growth mindset
- You have exceptional and proactive communication (verbal and written) and interpersonal skills
- You enjoy collaborating with team members who are working together to re-envision the Community Development Finance Industry

Compensation:
At NFF, we are invested in discussing the depth and breadth of each candidate’s background and experience during the interview process and using that information to determine the best offer while considering internal pay equity. The salary range for this position is $85,000-$105,000. If provided an offer, NFF will determine salary compensation based on relevant skills and years of experience. NFF also takes into consideration internal equity in setting salary bands for each role. NFF provides an attractive benefits package that currently includes up to 18 paid holidays, 3 floating holidays, unlimited vacation time off, health insurance with NFF funded health reimbursement account on medical plan, and employer contributions toward retirement plan.
