Cycles of Change is seeking a part or full-time bicycle mechanic to work at The Bikery.
The Bikery is a full service community bike shop, operated by our collectively run, non-profit dedicated to improving the lives of East Bay residents by providing a variety of bicycle education programs for youth and adults.
Staff at The Bikery are expected to operate as Mechanics, Educators, and Customer Service Representatives.
About The Bikery:
The Bikery started in 2009 and is a community bike shop located less than half a mile from the East Oakland school where Cycles began. The Bikery offers used bikes for sale, full-service repairs, earn-a-bike programs for youth, and Upcycle, an adult commuter program for low-income residents. Through these endeavors we have built deep, multi-generational relationships with schools, community-based organizations, and families throughout East Oakland and Alameda County as a whole.
We are collectively run by Oakland-based educators of color. We prioritize the learning and leadership of youth, people from Oakland and the Bay Area, women, queer and transgender folks. We work to empower each other with the skills, knowledge and resources of biking, partnering with youth from the community and local schools.
Staffing Qualifications and Responsibilities
Passionate and committed to youth development, particularly in Oakland
High level of cultural competency
Clear, prompt, nonviolent communicator
Desire to be part of a collectively-run nonprofit organization
Familiarity with the local area, especially Oakland
Ability to work a flexible schedule a plus
Bilingual or more a plus
Work Schedule
The Bikery is open 5 days a week (currently closed Wednesdays and Sundays), and shifts are 6.5 hours long. The applicant must be willing to work at least two Saturdays per month. This position is part time, ranging from 6.5 to 26 hours per week, with the possibility of additional hours.
Start Date: Start date determined upon hire into position.
Compensation: $23.89 / hour. Raises to compensation available annually, and if the applicant joins other positions within Cycles of Change.

Requirements
Qualifications
at least one year in a professional bicycle shop or community bike repair project
at least one year in the retail industry or in customer service positions
at least one year in social services, education, youth development, or community work
Mechanics:
Can perform bicycle mechanic tasks with proficiency that includes: fix-a-flat, cable and housing replacement, chain installation for geared and single-speed bikes, brake adjustment for standard brake types, and shifter adjustments for standard Shimano and SRAM shifter/derailleur systems.
Can ensure that bicycle repairs are done to an excellent standard of safety and functionality.
Customer Service:
Treats customers with dignity and respect, regardless of whether the person is a paying customer or not.
Able to offer customers appropriate information about: a) types and styles of bikes, b) proper sizing of bikes, c) recommendations for bicycle purchasing, d) recommendations for bicycle repair
General Bikery:
Computer literacy: has basic knowledge and skills with: Windows OS, spreadsheets, web-browsing, calculators
Point-of-Sales (POS)
Assertiveness and task-oriented: recognizes tasks that need to be completed, and will assertively take those tasks.
Tidiness: can use shared-spaces in a way that doesn’t negatively impact coworkers and customers.
Teamwork: can work collaboratively with others. Can be open, gracious, and friendly about giving & receiving feedback.
Responsibilities
Build bikes from The Bikery’s inventory of donated bikes
Assist customers with buying bikes and accessories
Doing ‘Repair Check-Ins’ according to Bikery procedures
Additional opportunities to participate in Cycles of Change work may be available, particularly for people who have skills and experience in fundraising, finance, outreach, public relations, human resources, and volunteer coordination.
