The LOCKSS Program makes the award-winning LOCKSS distributed digital preservation software platform, used worldwide by libraries to preserve and provide authoritative access to digital content, including scholarly communications, Web archives, and institutional repositories. It also operates digital preservation networks like the Global LOCKSS Network (GLN), delivers digital preservation services to organizations like the CLOCKSS Archive, and supports other digital preservation initiatives, all powered by the LOCKSS software. It is an internationally recognized part of the Stanford University Libraries (SUL) portfolio, having a major programmatic impact on the operations of memory organizations globally.
Position summary:
The LOCKSS Program seeks a Systems Support Specialist to provide reliable technical support in the deployment, operation and maintenance of the Linux-based LOCKSS system, including its classic and next-generation versions. This includes offering reliable technical support and training to end users via videoconference, phone or e-mail, understanding partner needs and IT environments, and participating in the creation of tools and documentation. In this role, you will:
- Develop a thorough understanding of the LOCKSS system to respond to partner requests for technical assistance.
- Triage, diagnose and resolve end-user issues with the LOCKSS system remotely, including hardware, software, storage and networking problems.
- Install, upgrade, configure and maintain the LOCKSS system and related Linux software to meet client needs and ensure compatibility with institutional requirements and infrastructure.
- Offer guidance and training to end users of varying degrees of technical sophistication, writing or enhancing product documentation as appropriate.
- Investigate and devise new tooling and techniques, propose and draft new documentation, and identify and champion opportunities for process improvement.
- Perform routine server administration and maintenance.
To be successful in this role, you will bring:
- Two-year college degree and two or more years of relevant experience, or a combination of education and relevant experience.
- Experience with Linux environments, including installation, upgrade, configuration and basic systems administration.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, both written and verbal, and ability to provide excellent client service.
- Ability to apply diagnostic techniques and information technology best practices, including security, to problem resolution and troubleshooting.
In addition, preferred requirements include:
- Experience with typical support ticketing and task management and tracking systems.
- Knowledge of, or ability to learn about, basic security concerns and solutions in networked/distributed computing environments, including configuration of SSH, VPNs, and firewalls.
- Familiarity with common Linux utilities and ability to scaffold systems tasks via scripts.
- Experience with automating systems administration tasks with Ansible.
