School/Unit description:
The Office of Faculty Development, Diversity and Engagement (OFDDE) provides professional and leadership development and supports community-building, engagement and faculty recruitment for all career stages of Stanford’s Professoriate workforce. OFDDE promotes diversity in faculty recruitment through consultation with campus units and the IDEAL Provostial Fellows program. The office supports faculty development through new faculty orientation, writing and mentoring workshops, briefings for department chairs, and in partnership with other campus units. OFDDE cultivates faculty engagement through social opportunities and community-building on campus and also provides faculty data and reports for internal and external audiences.
Position Summary:
The Associate Vice Provost (AVP) & Executive Director of Faculty Development Programs is responsible for design, development, implementation and oversight of faculty development programs for Stanford’s professoriate at all career stages. Reporting to the Vice Provost for Faculty Development, Diversity and Engagement, the AVP serves as the manager for three professional staff members and oversees the office budget. The AVP represents the Office of Faculty Development, Diversity and Engagement on university-wide committees, with schools within Stanford, and with external peer groups related to faculty development and diversity, as determined by the Vice Provost. The AVP role is both a manager of the office and an individual contributor for development of faculty development and leadership programs.
In this role, you will
Manage three professional staff members including an Organizational Insight Analyst responsible for analyzing and reporting on faculty demographic data, faculty applicant demographic data and developing university-wide faculty availability data; Communications Specialist responsible for developing and maintaining OFDDE Canvas Courses, OFDDE website, quarterly bulletin, marketing and communication mailings; and Executive Assistant responsible for event planning and coordination for department chair and other leadership events and programs for the Provost and President, Emeriti Council programming, as well as office management and financial record processing.
Provide leadership, strategic planning and subject-matter content while designing, launching and managing faculty professional development and leadership development initiatives with university-wide impact, including:
- New Faculty Orientation
- Mentoring programs
- Early Career Faculty Development programs
- Mid-Career Faculty Development programs
- Department chair professional development, New Chairs’ Orientation and oversight for Provost’s Quarterly Chair Briefings
- Executive Coaching Pilot Program
Coordinate Stanford’s cohort of department chairs and senior associate deans participating in the Faculty Advancement Network (FAN) Leadership Institute and maintain the related Stanford Canvas self-paced course based on FAN network materials.
Oversee and manage the OFDDE budget, including developing, monitoring, analyzing forecasting and reporting to ensure the financial success of the organization.
Provide Faculty Search Committee consultation and briefings to department chairs, dean’s offices, search chairs and faculty search committees regarding faculty recruitment and hiring best practices to increase faculty diversity. Develop and maintain content in Canvas site for asynchronous faculty search briefings.
Serve as member of the Faculty Search Applicant Tracking (FSAT) Governance Board with faculty affairs officers representing Stanford’s schools and the central Faculty Affairs office.
Develop Faculty Affirmative Action Plan (AAP) narrative in conjunction with the schools and provide it to Diversity and Access office, as well as assist Vice Provost in preparing and conducting annual AAP meetings with Deans.
Serve as liaison with Emeriti/ae Council Expansion Project.
Represent Stanford on external committees including Faculty Advancement Network Executive Committee, Ivy Plus AA/EO Group, MIT-9, as needed.
Provide consultation and advice regarding faculty development initiatives and contribute to university-wide efforts when faculty development and faculty equity and inclusion issues and projects are involved.
To be successful in this role, you will bring
- Minimum Education and Experience Required: Bachelor’s degree and seven years of relevant experience in administrative and financial management, or combination of education and relevant experience.
- Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Familiar with recent research on the barriers to professional development and advancement for tenure-track faculty members at research universities, including women and faculty from minoritized groups.
- Familiar with recent research on the challenges and issues for academic leaders in research universities.
- Knowledge of best practices and recent research about the faculty search process for recruiting and hiring a broad and inclusive faculty.
- Strong writing skills.
- Strong oral communication skills.
- Strong project management, budget management and time management.
In addition, preferred requirements include:
- Advanced degree such as Ed.D or Ph.D in higher education-related field is strongly preferred.
- Experience working in a university-setting developing and implementing tenured and tenure-track faculty development programs is strongly preferred.
- Experience managing a professional workforce in a higher education setting is preferred
- Familiarity with developing online courses in Canvas.

The expected pay range for this position is $189,000 to $247,000 per annum.
