Position Summary: The Frydman Lab in the Department of Biology is seeking a 100% full-time Life Science Research Professional (LSRP) 3 to be a lab manager and work with the group to identify the molecular mechanisms of protein homeostasis. We are looking for a highly motivated LSRP to perform complex functions and activities related to defined research projects and to conduct and analyze experiments independently. Specifically, the LSRP3 will work as part of a team studying the role and mechanisms of chaperones to maintain protein folding and quality control.
The ideal candidate will have previous experience with wet lab management, training new personnel, protein purification, molecular biology, and cell biology techniques and procedures. They will also be familiar with the principles of biochemistry plus have familiarity and interest in working with cell models of disease. Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to 1) tissue culture, 2) DNA cloning and expression of proteins, 3) protein purification; 4) microscopy (e.g. confocal microscopy, image analysis), 5) biochemical analyses, 6) managing the wet lab, and 7) supervising other technicians and train new lab members. Familiarity with statistical methods is a plus.
Additional day-to-day lab functions include ordering supplies, and maintaining shared research equipment and spaces. Applicants should be organized, detail-oriented, intellectually motivated, and have excellent communication skills. The applicant will be involved in research projects with collaborative, team-oriented supervision.
The LSRP3 will report to the Principal Investigator. Weekend work may be necessary at times. Required weekend work can be substituted for normal workday hours. Work with virus and radioactivity may be required. Work will be carried out primarily in the Department of Biology in the Clark Center but will require visits to core facilities and collaborating labs.
This is a 100% FTE, 2 year, fixed-term, exempt position. This position will be based on the Stanford campus.

CORE DUTIES*:
● Design research approaches for a major portion of research project(s), including background research, experimental design and execution, problem-solving, and writing up for publication.
● Develop new protocols; test and evaluate a variety of approaches.
● Perform complex (lab and/or field) experiments, and maintain detailed records of experiments and outcomes; analyze and interpret research data resulting from original procedures and methods.
● Assist with new research proposals and applications for funding and grants.
● Lead or participate in multidisciplinary teams across different faculties or schools.
● Prepare periodic progress reports or written reports on all phases of the research project.
● Contribute substantively to the preparation of papers for publication, especially in the results section. May be a co-author on publications. Present ongoing work and findings to colleagues at academic conferences.
● Perform ongoing literature review to remain current with new procedures and related research; propose new research directions based on new advances discussed in literature.
● Oversee supply and equipment budget under minimal supervision of principal investigator or business manager.
● Work with health and safety department to ensure lab complies with regulations and all required trainings.
● Formally supervise and train new staff or students as needed, including hiring, performance management, and related duties, in addition to instruction on techniques and consultation on project work.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Education & Experience:
Bachelor's degree in related scientific field and four years of relevant work experience; or Master’s degree in a related scientific field and two years of relevant experience; or PhD in related science field.
Preferred Education & Experience:
The candidate should have a B.A. or B.S. or Masters in Biology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Neuroscience, or a related field, and at least 3 years of experience in a relevant laboratory setting, preferably with experience in cell culture and protein purification. They must be able to work closely with other lab members, yet independently, and must be comfortable presenting and discussing their work. Exceptional organizational abilities and attention to detail are required. Strong references that document prior research experience and skills are required.

● General computer skills, experience with databases and scientific applications, and ability to quickly learn and master computer programs.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:
● Frequently stand, walk, twist, bend, stoop, squat, grasp lightly, use fine manipulation, grasp forcefully, perform desk-based computer tasks, use telephone, write by hand, lift, carry, push and pull objects weighing over 40 pounds.
● Occasionally sit, kneel, crawl, reach and work above shoulders, sort and file paperwork or parts.
● Rarely climb, scrub, sweep, mop, chop and mix or operate hand and foot controls.
● Must have correctible vision to perform duties of the job.
● Ability to bend, squat, kneel, stand, reach above shoulder level, and move on hard surfaces for up to eight hours.
● Ability to lift heavy objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
● Ability to work in a dusty, dirty, and odorous environment.
● Position may require repetitive motion.

The expected pay range for this position is $93,062 to $111,670 per annum.
