POSITION DETAILSThe CUNY School of Labor and Urban Studies (SLU) was established in August 2018 and is the newest School within the system. The mission of the School is to: 1) offer undergraduate and graduate programs of labor and urban studies to working adults and traditional-age students; 2) expand educational opportunities to working adults while meeting the workforce development needs of the City and State, and 3) serving the labor and broader community by conducting research, offering leadership development programs, hosting forums and national conferences, and publishing national labor journals to promote debate on issues critical to labor and working-class communities.
SLU seeks a Director of Institutional Development who will work with existing and new partners to support and advance the educational, research, and public service mission of the School. The Director will be responsible for increasing the institutional capacity of the School by strengthening existing relationships and building new ones. They will work with unions, community organizations, philanthropic organizations, government agencies, legislative bodies, non-profits, and private donors to raise external funds. They will collaborate with the Dean and SLU’s advisory bodies. I.e., Labor Advisory Board, SLU Foundation Board, etc.) to identify external funding sources that will advance the School’s strategic plan. The Director will report to the Dean of the School
or his designee.
Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to:- Designing, implementing, and managing a comprehensive plan and strategy for aligning external funding with the School’s vision, mission, and goals
- Coordinate the School’s activities related to philanthropy, i.e., foundations and major donors by expanding upon SLU’s existing relationships and building new ones
- Identify philanthropic funding opportunities, with a concentration on foundations and individual contributors
- Develop donor solicitations, create, and evaluate fund-raising appeals, provide regular progress reports to key stakeholders, and develop and execute a professional donor stewardship program
- Developing, monitoring, and evaluating fund-raising appeals and providing regular progress reports to key stakeholders
- Provide leadership and innovative thinking in developing new programs and community engagement activities that will appeal to foundations and private donors
- Develop a close working relationship with CUNY’s Advancement Office to leverage existing fundraising infrastructure, create efficiencies, and multiply impact
- Lead the organizational development of the SLU’s nascent Foundation, including the development of its Foundation Board of Directors, and ensuring that the Foundation develops best practices as they relate to governance, financial reporting, program accountability, and compliance
NOTE:Until further notice, this is a hybrid position, eligible to work remotely and on-site in the
office.
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum:Bachelor's Degree and eight years; related experience required.
Preferred:- Strong ties to labor, community, and philanthropic organizations
- Demonstrated capacity to interact effectively with donors and institutional leaders, with a minimum of five years of experience in proven successful fund-raising activities
- Excellent organizational, financial, and communication skills
- Collaborative and team-oriented work style
- Experience in developing and implementing strategic plans
- Excellent oral and written communications skills
- Strong technology skills
- Academic experience
- Well versed, in-depth knowledge, and experience with social justice organizations and funders
CUNY TITLE OVERVIEW- Directs College's fundraising strategy and administration of fund-raising programs.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITSStarting salary from $119,995 - $141,858; commensurate with education and experience.
