Kids in Need of Defense (KIND) is a global leader in the protection of unaccompanied and separated children who are forcibly displaced from their countries of origin. Launched in 2008, KIND champions a world in which every child’s rights and well-being are protected throughout their journey to safety.

Position Summary
KIND seeks a Director, Talent and Culture to work with HR leadership, the HR Business Partners (HRBPs), and KIND’s senior leadership team to identify and implement the organizational talent management practices that enable KIND to most effectively leverage its workforce, for the fulfilment of KIND’s mission. The Director also leads the strategy to attract and select the strong candidate bench that further strengthens the KIND team. In addition, the Director champions a rewarding and fulfilling employee experience at KIND, driving initiatives that both enhance our culture and that allow every KIND employee to have the greatest impact possible in their roles.
This is a remote position based from any location in the United States. Occasional travel (less than 5%) is expected in the role.
This position is contingent upon continued funding.

Essential Functions- Talent Management
- Working with the CPO, and other members of the HR Leadership Team, helps to identify, build and deliver the strategic People Roadmap that supports the organizational plan.
- Designs and oversees the talent management strategy that pragmatically supports the organizational plan, working closely with the CPO, VP, Global Human Resources, the HRBPs and leaders.
- Partners with senior leadership and the HRBPs to build succession plans for critical roles, and oversees the resulting action / retention planning process at the organizational level.
- Designs and coordinates an annual talent review and calibration exercise across the entire organization, working closely with the HRBPs.
- Proactively flags retention risks and emerging succession gaps for critical roles, allowing HRBPs and senior leaders to take early action.
- Works closely with the Director, Learning & Development and the HRBPs to ensure that KIND’s learning and development strategy pragmatically supports KIND’s talent and succession planning activities.
- Regularly and systematically evaluates the effectiveness and ROI of KIND’s talent management activities, and reports on impact.
- Talent Acquisition and Workforce Planning
- Develops and owns the organizational Talent Acquisition (TA) strategy.
- Partners closely with Programs leadership, the Strategic Performance & Evaluation team, and the HRBPs to build and support KIND’s workforce plan.
- Oversees the technical recruitment team that supports Legal and Psychosocial (PSS) recruitment across the US offices and headquarters.
- Works with the VP, Global Human Resources and recruiting professionals embedded within the matrixed HR function to deliver non-technical recruitment aligned to the overarching TA strategy.
- Working with the team, cultivates strong partnerships with critical universities, careers offices, and recruitment partners.
- Builds and champions KIND’s employee advocacy strategy, partnering with Communications colleagues.
- Oversees KIND’s approach to internal talent mobility, championing it as a component of KIND’s rewarding employee experience.
- Working with the team, ensures the effective running of KIND’s internship program and its incorporation into KIND’s talent pipeline strategy.
- Produces KIND’s Recruitment Dashboard and supporting reports, exploring with the broader HR team innovative ways to continually drive improvements and an excellent candidate and hiring manager experience.
- Careers & Performance
- Owns the organizational approach to feedback and performance, championing the best practices that enable a true culture of feedback and continuous learning.
- Works with HR leadership and the HRBPs to embed the people practices that truly enable this feedback culture and meaningful career progression at KIND.
- Oversees the smooth running of the performance and feedback system.
- Builds career frameworks and competency models that are aligned to KIND’s mission and values, and that provide clarity in job expectations, behaviors, and career paths.
- Employee Experience
- Partners closely with the Chief People Officer and HR team to define and implement KIND’s employee experience strategy, including the key components of the Employee Value Proposition.
- Works closely with the Director, Internal Communications to weave these components into staff messaging, sites, and resources.
- Leads KIND’s Wellbeing program, championing a holistic focus on emotional, mental, physical, social, professional and financial wellbeing.
- Designs and implements an engaging biennial staff survey process, targeting > 70% participation.
- Uses the above survey and other feedback channels to gather input, evaluate, and take action, engaging staff in how KIND is responding to their feedback.
- Partnering with the Team and Organization
- Manages and coaches the Legal and PSS Recruiting Team, and a Talent & Culture Specialist.
- Effectively works the HR matrix to partner with broader recruiting colleagues, to deliver KIND’s TA and Talent Management strategies.
- Advises KIND leadership on talent management, TA and culture-related matters.
- Forges strong partnerships with the Communications team, to maximize the effectiveness of internal communications, social media, and other external facing channels.
- Fiscal Management
- Monitors and proactively manages KIND’s cost per hire and other key metrics.
- Oversees third party partner and vendor selection, negotiations, and management for all tools related to talent management, talent acquisition and culture.
- Tracks and oversees the related budgets, ensuring responsible spend.
Qualifications and Requirements- Graduate degree in human resources, organizational psychology or similar required, or equivalent experience.
- Strong experience (typically 7+ years) of leading talent management strategies in multiple organizations, preferably including experience in a matrixed, global environment.
- Demonstrable achievements in leveraging succession planning and talent pipeline management to achieve greater organizational success.
- Strong knowledge of leading Talent Acquisition practices and their associated metrics.
- A track record in delivering organizational effectiveness, transformation and change management projects.
- Demonstrable experience of acting as thought partner and advisor to senior leadership, with ability to influence and engage at all levels.
- Experience leading and delivering projects, working with project teams that sit across the HR sub-functions.
- Experience of Employee Experience and Employee Value Proposition programs/initiatives a plus.
- Experience in workforce planning approaches and tools also a plus.
- Familiarity with multiple talent management and HRIS systems.
- Excellent organizational skills with the ability to work on multiple projects in a deadline-oriented environment.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills in English.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (such as Teams, Excel, etc.).
- Ability to work collaboratively and multi-task in our KIND environment, managing numerous priorities and emerging opportunities.
- Excellent organizational skills with the ability to work on multiple projects in a deadline-oriented environment; ability to prioritize tasks and delegate as appropriate.
- Ability to multitask and work with a sense of urgency in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.

- Experience working and communicating in a remote environment preferred but not required.
