The opportunity
Heart & Stroke offers a remote work environment and candidates can work from anywhere in Canada.
The Application Engineering Manager leads a team responsible for building bespoke custom applications and integration into the company’s technology ecosystem.
As Heart and Stroke is modernizing key technology solutions and also, it’s technology engineering ways of working, this role is also accountable for driving software engineering maturity uplift and productivity improvements through the progressive operationalization of modern delivery methods and emerging technologies including AI-assisted development tools.
In addition, this role architects technology solutions, supported by the Director of Software and Platform Engineering and then oversees the full execution lifecycle, from discovery and design through development, testing, deployment, and operational support. The manager ensures all solutions are scalable, secure, maintainable, and aligned with enterprise strategy and business objectives.
This role combines hands-on technical delivery and architecture expertise with leadership responsibilities, guiding teams through both a delivery transformation and day to day complex projects and working closely with Platform and Data teams, as required, Security and Infrastructure & Operations to deliver technical solutions. The Manager serves as the bridge collaborating closely with product, fundraising, mission, marketing and project management.
The ideal candidate brings a strong blend of technical leadership, software architecture and engineering expertise, AI experience and system integration experience, along with the ability to work cross-functionally with stakeholders across Product, Fundraising, Marketing, Engineering, Security, and Infrastructure & Operations.
How you will make an impact every day
Stakeholder Engagement & Collaboration
Work closely with Product, Fundraising, Marketing and Mission stakeholders, and Project Managers to clarify project scope, elicit requirements, and identify project delivery timelines.
Project Intake, Solution Design & Execution
Technical Leadership & Vendor Engagement
Engineering Delivery Leadership
Architect major changes to existing solutions and work with the Director of Software engineering to co-architect new solutions, using a methodical approach that anchors on functional and non-functional requirements, manages risks and considers alternatives.
Contribute to internal application solution design standards, integration standards, API governance, and patterns (REST, event‑driven, messaging).
AI-Enabled Engineering Adoption & Operationalization
Operational Excellence
Work with Infrastructure & Operations and Business requirements partner to identify non-functional requirements including operability, availability, performance, reliability and security
Talent Management
Lead talent development, ensuring high standards, competence and that staff is well supported in fulfilling their accountabilities, developing their skills and achieving their career potential.
As required, recruit skilled talent in support of current and future Foundation needs, following Foundation policies, interviewing methodology and assessment guidelines.
Familiarize and comply with all Heart & Stroke policies while ensuring accurate administration of employee related information: absence records, vacation, title, etc.
Foster collaboration with cross-functional partners in Product, Business, Data and Application Engineering, Security, and Infrastructure & Operations.
Who we need
Education
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or a related discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and progressive professional experience.
Experience
Experience with Azure, API/microservices and modern code frameworks (e.g. React, Node.js, JavaScript, Python).
Experience implementing, integrating, or enhancing Digital Experience Platforms (Contentful, Optimizely, Sitecore or other), an asset.
Skills
AI assisted design, development and QA tool chain (Anthropic, OpenAI, Microsoft, Google et cetera).

This role offers a hiring range of $80,000-$105,000, aligned with our compensation framework and your professional background. We believe that time off is integral to the personal health and wellness of our employees.
