Stanford Medicine is seeking a motivated and resourceful Research Communications Librarian (Librarian 2) to develop services to inform researchers and educators at Stanford Medicine about the scholarly communication process and analyze the impact of research output. The Research Communications Librarian will develop research impact models for departments and individuals and advocate and inform the Stanford Medicine community on best practices in scholarly communication; including open access, alternative publishing models, data management, copyright, and open educational resources.
The Research Communications Librarian serves as liaison to select departments in the School of Medicine and provides research support services for Stanford Medicine including the Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital (LPCH) and Stanford Health Care (SHC).Reporting to the Manager, Research and Instruction, the Research Communications Librarian is a key member of the Research and Instruction Team at the Lane Medical Library and Knowledge Management Center. This position will work closely with other Research and Instruction librarians to provide consultations and other research services, collaborate with students and faculty on systematic reviews, and provide training in databases and research software. We are seeking dynamic candidates with demonstrated potential to lead our efforts and provide innovative educational approaches while maintaining a tradition of excellence. The position works closely with other staff to influence and achieve our collective goals in support of the School’s research, clinical and educational mission.
This position will be based on the Stanford campus and will be considered for an option of telecommuting from the Bay Area (hybrid of working 2-3 days on-site), subject to operational need.
Education & Experience (Required)
Advanced Degree in Library Science or a relevant academic discipline with a demonstrated understanding of academic libraries and two or more years of relevant experience in a relevant library setting or a combination of education and relevant experience.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (Required)
- Experience with relevant aspects of library operations including understanding of contemporary library practices, trends and emerging technologies.
- Demonstrated understanding of the broad scope of library operations with ability to understand how their role interacts with the rest of the organization.
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment and negotiate issues with people from different parts of the library.
- Ability to identify challenges and opportunities, engage others in their resolution and recommend appropriate courses of action.
- Demonstrated ability to evaluate online resources in terms of content quality, functionality and user interface issues.
- Ability to independently perform complex job functions such as collection management reviews, preparation of major exhibits, developing policies for business practices.
- Consistent display of strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Demonstrated bibliographic expertise or basic managerial/supervisory skills.

Physical Requirements
- Constantly sit, perform desk-based computer tasks.
- Frequently twist/bend/stoop/squat, grasps lightly/fine manipulation, grasp forcefully, sort/file paperwork or parts, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.
- Occasionally stand/walk, reach/work above shoulders, writing by hand, kneel/crawl, climb (ladders, scaffolds, or other).
- Rarely use a telephone, operate hand controls.
- Must be able to push and maneuver a fully-loaded cart weighing up to 650 pounds that requires an initial push force up to 50 pounds.
Working Conditions
- May work in confined spaces and at heights 4-10 feet; be exposed to dust and mold; work extended hours, evenings and weekends.

The expected pay range for this position is $73,000 to $99,000 per annum.
