The Center for Precision Mental Health and Wellness in Stanford University’s School of Medicine, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences is seeking a Research Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant to apply medical knowledge and experience in an innovative area of precision medicine trials focused on mental health. The Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant will assess psychiatric and physical health and administer treatments through precision medicine studies aligned with scope of practice delegated responsibilities, oversee study conduct and assure study participant safety, and coordinate and manage care for participant enrolled in precision medicine trials.
These groundbreaking trials are among the first to integrate brain-based measures, such as functional magnetic resonance imaging, with personalized selection of exploratory and targeted interventions. Success in this role will require the ability to effectively apply medical knowledge in these innovative trial settings. The Research Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant must be highly adaptable, with exceptional situational awareness, capable of rapidly assessing and responding to medical situations. Remaining calm and decisive during study visits and participant interactions will be essential.
Procedures will include diagnosis and treatment of medical conditions such as major depressive disorder, administration of schedule 1 drugs, on-label and off-label medications for subtypes of major depressive disorder within an investigational setting, overseeing participants when tapering off current medications to ensure enrollment criteria, titrate dose according to study protocols, perform physical exams to ensure enrollment criteria, assess adverse events, track for changes in clinical symptoms and suicidality during study participation, track vital signs during study participation, participate in study design, communicate with referring physicians and other health care providers, advise participants to ensure compliance and retention in studies, be trained and prepared to implement CPR, emergency cardiovascular care and emergency medications in case of severe adverse advents, and maintain source documentation.
The Research Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant position will be under the direction of the principal investigator, and will interact closely with a study psychiatrist. They will work in a dynamic and collaborative group including scientists, data analysts, clinical research professionals, and academic physicians.

Duties include:
· Ensure the safety of study participants, and maintain communication with their families/caregivers and clinicians.
· Provide clinical and administrative medical support and oversight for research clinical trials based on scope of practice; obtain complete diagnostic assessments, conduct physical exams, review medical charts, assess findings, prescribe and refill medication, and perform designated procedures according to written protocols.
· Collaborate with clinical staff, researchers, outside clinicians, and other staff to administer treatment and study protocols.
· Assess, grade, and document adverse events; apply triage and judgment to determine course of action.
· Oversee and, as needed, administer medications and treatments per study protocol and scope of practice.
· Comply with institutional policies, standard operating procedures, and guidelines; prepare and submit documentation as required by the study protocol and study sponsor; interpret complex protocols and regulatory requirements.
· Coordinate and collaborate with principal investigator to review study protocol; assess and analyze feasibility, budget projections, and staffing needs.
· Supervise and train non- clinical and clinical staff/students, as needed.
· Determine study participant eligibility, enroll study participants, and maintain study participant records.
· Support grant and philanthropic funded investigator research with schedule 1 drugs and off-label drugs.

CERTIFICATIONS & LICENSES:
· Licensed as a Registered Nurse by the California State Board of Registered Nursing. Certified as Nurse Practitioner by the California State Board of Registered Nursing.
· Eligibility to obtain a Nurse Practitioner Furnishing (NPF) Certificate, in accordance with Business and Professions Code, Section 2836.1. California Code of Regulations, Section 1480, et seq.
Or
Certification to practice as a physician assistant issued by the California State Board of Medical Quality Assurance. Certification from the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants.
· Current basic and advanced CPR certification.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:
· Frequently stand/walk, sit, perform desk-based computer tasks, twist/bend/stoop/squat, grasp lightly/fine manipulation, use a telephone, write by hand, and sort/file paperwork or parts.
· Occasionally reach/work above shoulders, grasp forcefully, operate foot and/or hand controls.
· Rarely kneel/crawl, climb (ladders, scaffolds, or other), scrub/sweep/mop/chop/mix, operate a manual pipette.
· Ability to obtain and maintain a valid California non-commercial class license and operate vehicle during daylight hours.

WORK CONDITIONS
This position is based on the Stanford main campus.
The expected pay range for this position is $131,000 to $157,000 per annum. The actual pay will be pro-rated based on the 50% FTE.
